How I Taught my Toddler to Read, Write and Do MathHi fellow parents, I started homeschooling my 4 year old daughter Maeleth ever since she was born since our financial condition at home wasn't stable yet and I am working from home anyway. However, recently we were able to enroll Mae in nursery school thanks to government subsidies so that her school fees are only $3 per month. Really thankful to God for that. Before she started school on 1 September 2020, I've been teaching her how to read, write and count ever since she was 2 years old. I believe that children have a great capacity and potential to learn, so I didn't hold back for my daughter. Mae also shows the interest to learn, so your toddler's attitude towards learning new things is important too. Make the learning fun by making it seem like play time and they will absorb the knowledge better. I must first give a disclaimer that I am not trained or certified as an early childhood educator. I am just sharing the methods I used to teach my daughter which happened to work for her. Hopefully some of these ways I used can be helpful to you!

COVID-19 Quarantine in a Singapore Hotel: a Parent's ExperienceHi this is Milton! Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, my sis-in-law Adeline Kang was quarantined with her family in a hotel in Singapore after relocating back from Sydney recently. It is a law in Singapore that whoever returns from overseas has to serve a "stay-home notice" of 14 days before they can leave their home or location of quarantine. She has graciously allowed me to share her story on this blog. If you are keen to read about her parenting and products review blog called "Ader IBlog", do check it out here. Without further ado, read her quarantine story below! Kids Toilet Training Tips: How we Skipped the Potty and Started on the Toilet BowlI still remember how excited I was when my daughter Maeleth Sarah Goh at 30 months old (2.5 years old) is finally peed in the toilet bowl after so many months of encouragement. She used to be so afraid of sitting on the toilet bowl and would cry and strongly protest everytime we attempted to carry her to the toilet bowl. But it's true that when she's ready, she'll do it. Perhaps she grew taller and the hole of the toilet bowl looks smaller now to her than it did previously. Whatever the case is, be patient and don't worry or compare when other kids are starting. When your child is mentally prepared, he or she will want to try. The night when I asked Mae "Do you want to sit on the toilet bowl?" and she replied "Yes I want to try", I was so shocked. I was expecting the usual answer: "No!". It's these moments in the parenting journey that are so fulfilling and amazing to experience firsthand. My heartbeat was racing excitedly and when I saw her pee for the first time while sitting on the toilet bowl, my heart swelled with happiness! Only a parent will understand this feeling. It's funny how the things that excite you change when you become a parent! We skipped the potty (the little kids sized portable toilet bowl) because we feel that if your child gets used to the potty, then you have to retrain him or her to use the actual toilet bowl later on. Without further ado, here are some kids toilet training tips that we believe helped Mae to eventually become mentally-ready to use the toilet bowl. 10 Fun Activities for 1 Year Olds to Do at Home When You're a Stay At Home ParentDaily life can get really repetitive and mundane if you're a stay at home parent, especially if you don't consciously look for activities for 1 year olds to do at home. Through this blog post, I would like to share 10 fun activities that we do with Mae at home almost daily, and I believe that these activities either teach her something, or train her in some skills. I hope that your little one will also have fun and benefit from these activities: 1) ReadingThis is a very educational activity and there are so many benefits to it! Mae loves us to read to her, especially books with large pictures! As she is a Peppa Pig fan, she loves it when we read two of her books to her: "123 with Peppa" and "Peppa's Big Day Out". Seeing the characters in the book whom she is so familiar with makes her excited to listen to the books being read. These books are educational: one teaches about counting numbers, and both have lots of characters and objects to teach Mae about. Reading is definitely one of the great activities for 1 year olds to do at home when you're a stay at home parent! 14 Ways that May Get Baby to Sleep Through the Night: The Maeleth MethodGetting your baby to sleep through the night could be number one on your prayer or wish list right now. We've been there, praying and waiting for the fabled "sleep through the night" to finally happen, and it did. Our daughter Maeleth (At the time of writing this post, she is 16 months old) sleeps through the night unless she is sick or teething. Through this post, we would love to share with you the methods that we use to help Mae sleep through the night - we call them collectively as "The Maeleth Method". These methods work for Mae, and we hope that they will work for your baby too. Without further ado, here we go: 1) Diffuse Essential OilsWe have a diffuser which we use to mainly diffuse lavender essential oil before Mae goes to bed. Inhaling the calming and fragrant scent of the essential oils helps Mae to get sleepy real fast, and go into deeper sleep than if we don't diffuse it. This is one simple method that may help to get baby to sleep through the night. |
