17 June 2018 - The Power in Knowing God as your Father - Pastor Lawrence Lim Sermon Notes - New Creation Church Sermon Notes

Praise and Worship songs performed:
(I missed out songs before this)
  1. Your Saving Grace - New Creation Worship
  2. Build My Life - Brett Younker
  3. You Are The Reason - Calum Scott
  4. You’re a Good Good Father - Chris Tomlin

Last year in September 2017, the Lord spoke to Pastor Joseph Prince to pray for the salvation of North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un.
At that time relations between USA and North Korea were very tense. But praise Jesus that just a few days ago, Singapore hosted the Trump-Kim Summit.
In just less than a year, relations turned around for good. It’s like a heavenly wink from God.

President Donald Trump called Singapore a country of profound grace and beauty. Of all the words he could have said, he said “grace”.
A word that we in New Creation Church are so familiar with.

Prayer changes everything. You can pray and things will turn around for your good.

Just coming to service on Sunday is not enough - We need to be in constant contact with God’s word throughout the week.
We also need to be constantly connected through kingdom friendships.

John 17:6 - The prayer in John 17 is the longest prayer by Jesus recorded in the Bible.
It is called the High Priestly Prayer because He was interceding for us to God.
Jesus looked into the future and was interceding for us who would believe in Him.
Jesus came to reveal a name of God that was not commonly known to the people.
There are many names of God: Elohim (Creator God - it’s a plural name which points to the triune nature of God), Yahweh (Covenant-keeping God), El-Shaddai (Almighty God), and more.
Jesus came to reveal the name “Father” (Abba).
The name of God as Father was revealed in the Old Testament but it was not commonly used.
Examples of places in the Old Testament where God is referred to as Father: Psalm 103 and Isaiah 9.

““I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word.” (John 17:6 NKJV)

“As a father pities his children, So the LORD pities those who fear Him.” (Psalms 103:13 NKJV)

“For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6 NKJV)

John 17:11-12 - When you know God as Father, there is a protective power made available for you.
If you call God “Creator”, you will feel distant from Him.
If you call God “Father”, you will feel close and there is an intimacy.
Fear is irrational. When we feel fearful, we can run to our Heavenly Father Who is completely fearless.

“Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.” (John 17:11-12 NKJV)

Psalm 91 is saying that the protection we yearn for is found when we are near to God.
We are so close to God - we are in the shadow of the Almighty.

When you know God as Father, there is a protective power made available for you. If you call God “Creator”, you will feel distant from Him. If you call God “Father”, you will feel close and there is an intimacy.

Receive God's supply when you know Him as your Abba Father

John 17:25-26 - If you want to keep yourself in the love of God, you need to relate to God as your Father.

“O righteous Father! The world has not known You, but I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me. And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”” (John 17:25-26 NKJV)

At the cross, Jesus addressed God as “My God, My God” so that we can call God “My Father, My Father”.

Jesus was baptized in the River Jordan - the lowest point of Israel. It speaks of the lowest point in your life.
John the Baptist said that he is not worthy to even loose the sandal straps of Jesus -
Jesus didn’t need to be baptized but He submitted to the will of the Father.

When Jesus was baptized, a voice came from heaven and said “This is my beloved Son in Whom I am well-pleased”.
Your children need to hear this from you. Don’t wait until they perform well. Love them and they will want to perform.

We are as righteous as God today. We have the same righteousness that Jesus has.
God loves us as much as He loves Jesus. Every morning, remind yourself: “Abba You are well-pleased with me”.

The devil doesn’t play fair. He knows that if you know the truth, it will set you free.

Matthew 7:7-11 - If you know God as Father, you will be able to receive His supply and provision.
Even we who are evil give good things to our children because we love them.
Our Abba Father is definitely much more willing to give good things to us who ask Him.
Who walked on water with Jesus? Peter - the one who asked Jesus.

““Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” (Matthew 7:7-11 NKJV)

Luke 12:32 - Your Heavenly Father is happy to give to you because He loves it when you’re happy.
He does not give reluctantly and neither is He lacking. It is easy for Him to give.
He owns the cattle of a thousand hills.

““Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” (Luke 12:32 NKJV)

Matthew 6:7-9 - Just because you keep repeating your prayers robotically, doesn’t mean that God hears your prayers better.
After praying about something you’re believing for, there must be a point where you’re settled in your heart that God has heard and answered your request.
When you reach that point, thank Him for it in advance.
Even though God knows what we want and need, we still ask God because of our relationship with Him.
We play with our children because we are parent and child.
We want to spend time together with our children.
Similarly, God wants to spend time with us. He has a yearning for us.

“And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.” (Matthew 6:7-9 NKJV)

Song of Solomon 7:10 - When you go on a long work trip, doesn’t your heart yearn for your family?
That ‘lovesick’ feeling, God feels it towards us too.
Live life knowing that God’s love and desire is towards you.

“I am my beloved’s, And his desire is toward me.” (Song of Solomon 7:10 NKJV)

We can call God "Abba"

The Old Testament is originally written in Hebrew and the New Testament is originally written in Greek.
There is an untranslated Aramaic word in the New Testament that occurs three times - that word is “Abba”.

In Mandarin, there are different words for Father: 父亲 (formal), 爸爸 (casual term of endearment).

In English there are also different words for Father: Father (formal), daddy/papa (casual term of endearment).

Mark 14:36 - In this critical moment, Jesus called God “Abba”.
In a moment of crisis in your life, call God “Abba”.

“And He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will. ”” (Mark 14:36 NKJV)

Romans 8:15-16 - We are adopted children of God. We can call God “Abba”.

“For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,” (Romans 8:15-16 NKJV)

Galatians 4:4-7 - we are no longer slaves, but are now sons of God!

“But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.” (Galatians 4:4-7 NKJV)

In the Apostle Paul’s epistles Romans, I Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, He makes sure that the churches he writes to knows that God is their Father.

If you sin, God will discipline you not through sicknesses, but through His word. Just like how the Apostle Paul chastised the Corinthian church through his epistle.
Once a son, always a son. You will never be disowned by God.

Luke 15:16-24 - How does the Father treat us when we sin?
The father saw the prodigal son a long way off because he scanned the horizon everyday hoping that his son would return.
When we fail, God has compassion on us, hugs us and kisses us.
When you fail, you are still a son.
They had a great party to celebrate the son's return.

“And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything. “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.” ’ “And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ “But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry.” (Luke 15:16-24 NKJV)

I John 2:15-16 - You are empowered to not love the world when you know the Father’s love for you.
The only thing that can satisfy the vacuum in your heart is the Father’s love.

“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.” (I John 2:15-16 NKJV)

We have a Heavenly Abba who loves us. We yearn for His love.

Closing Prayer:
Pastor Lawrence Lim prayed a special prayer for all dads to receive wisdom from the Lord - to be able to raise their children well in God's ways, and for their words to have weight and authority to their children.
Pastor Lawrence then prayed the Aaronic priestly prayer for the whole congregation.

We are adopted children of God. We can call God “Abba”. We are no longer slaves, but sons of God!

I highly recommend purchasing Pastor Prince's sermons on his mobile app "Joseph Prince" on Apple App Store or Google Play Store even after you read these notes as I may have missed out something he shared and the overall experience is definitely different when you listen to him preaching directly!
Use these notes as a revision guide instead of solely depending on them!

These sermon notes are independently-compiled by me, and I'm just a loyal and regular attendee of the the church's Sunday services, and I feel led to take detailed personal sermon notes of Pastor Prince's anointed messages to share them with the world, which desperately needs the true word of God and the original gospel of grace.

I feel blessed to be able to attend Pastor Joseph Prince's services in person, and would like to help everyone who isn't able to attend in person, to get hold of the messages as soon as it is preached!
