1 October 2017 - Secrets of Youth Renewal: A Tale of Two Old Men - Pastor Lawrence Lim Sermon Notes Online - New Creation Church Sermon Notes Online
God’s supply of grace for you is always greater than the situation that you’re in.
We can rely on the grace of God everyday to keep us in all our ways.
When you believe in Jesus, your sins are forgiven and you remain as the righteousness of God in Him.
God is not imputing sin to you today. He does not see your sin, only your righteousness. Christ is your righteousness.
In 1967, Jerusalem was taken back by the nation of Israel after the Six Day War.
The times of the Gentiles as mentioned by Jesus have been fulfilled and we are about to enter into a new Millenia.
We become Christians not to suffer for Jesus but to enjoy His blessings. God swore by Himself (there is no one greater) that He will surely bless us.
II Samuel 17:27-29 - The first old man in this sermon is Barzillai. Barzillai was a blessing in David’s time of need.
“Now it happened, when David had come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash from Rabbah of the people of Ammon, Machir the son of Ammiel from Lo Debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite from Rogelim, brought beds and basins, earthen vessels and wheat, barley and flour, parched grain and beans, lentils and parched seeds, honey and curds, sheep and cheese of the herd, for David and the people who were with him to eat. For they said, “The people are hungry and weary and thirsty in the wilderness.”” (II Samuel 17:27-29 NKJV)
Are you worrying, complaining and fearful of death all the time?
Barzillai believed that he had regressed mentally.
Have you lost the willingness to accept new things from God?
Barzillai had lost his sense of taste.
The Bible is suitable for everyone at any phase of one’s life.
Barzillai has lost his sense of hearing.
Have you stopped listening to the word of God being preached?
Barzillai believed that he would be a burden to the king.
How can the king be burdened by him?
Our King (Jesus) has more than enough supplies to provide for us and we are a blessing, not a burden.
Are you held back by your own limiting beliefs? God has great plans for your life.
Whatever disability you have, God will make it into an advantageous ability for your life.
“And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim and went across the Jordan with the king, to escort him across the Jordan. Now Barzillai was a very aged man, eighty years old. And he had provided the king with supplies while he stayed at Mahanaim, for he was a very rich man. And the king said to Barzillai, “Come across with me, and I will provide for you while you are with me in Jerusalem.” But Barzillai said to the king, “How long have I to live, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem? I am today eighty years old. Can I discern between the good and bad? Can your servant taste what I eat or what I drink? Can I hear any longer the voice of singing men and singing women? Why then should your servant be a further burden to my lord the king? Your servant will go a little way across the Jordan with the king. And why should the king repay me with such a reward? Please let your servant turn back again, that I may die in my own city, near the grave of my father and mother. But here is your servant Chimham; let him cross over with my lord the king, and do for him what seems good to you.” And the king answered, “Chimham shall cross over with me, and I will do for him what seems good to you. Now whatever you request of me, I will do for you.” Then all the people went over the Jordan. And when the king had crossed over, the king kissed Barzillai and blessed him, and he returned to his own place.” (II Samuel 19:31-39 NKJV)
The Opposite of the First Unbelieving Old Man: Faith in God
Numbers 13:25-28 - “Flows with milk and honey” means that the land has an abundance of provisions.
“And they returned from spying out the land after forty days. Now they departed and came back to Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel in the Wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. Then they told him, and said: “We went to the land where you sent us. It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. Nevertheless the people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very large; moreover we saw the descendants of Anak there.” (Numbers 13:25-28 NKJV)
Numbers 13:30-33 - When you see yourself as a grasshopper, you become a grasshopper.
The children of Israel compared themselves with the giants, when they should be focusing on how great their God is instead.
If you compare yourself to your problems, you will be fearful.
If you compare your problems to your God, you will have faith and get good results!
Don’t tell God how big your problem is. Tell your problem how big your God is!
When we overcome our problems, we will get stronger. Our problems are bread to us.
When we trust in God, we will see the miraculous power of God working in the problems in our lives.
“Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.” But the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.” And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature. There we saw the giants ( the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”” (Numbers 13:30-33 NKJV)
The Secret to Youth Renewal Revealed: Follow Jesus to Possess your Inheritance
Numbers 14:24 - God was delighted by Caleb’s faith in Him. Caleb is the second old man in this sermon.
“But My servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit in him and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land where he went, and his descendants shall inherit it.” (Numbers 14:24 NKJV)
Joshua 14:6-13 - Caleb kept the vision that God put into his heart and never lost it.
He stopped aging at 40 years old ever since he believed in God’s promise for him.
He experienced physical youth renewal.
Caleb was eighty-five years old but he was still strong enough to fight a war!
Caleb was ready for a challenge. He chose to conquer a heavily fortified city filled with giants and not a leftover piece of land that no one wanted.
“Then the children of Judah came to Joshua in Gilgal. And Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him: “You know the word which the LORD said to Moses the man of God concerning you and me in Kadesh Barnea. I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land, and I brought back word to him as it was in my heart. Nevertheless my brethren who went up with me made the heart of the people melt, but I wholly followed the LORD my God. So Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘Surely the land where your foot has trodden shall be your inheritance and your children’s forever, because you have wholly followed the LORD my God.’ And now, behold, the LORD has kept me alive, as He said, these forty-five years, ever since the LORD spoke this word to Moses while Israel wandered in the wilderness; and now, here I am this day, eighty-five years old. As yet I am as strong this day as on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war, both for going out and for coming in. Now therefore, give me this mountain of which the LORD spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and that the cities were great and fortified. It may be that the LORD will be with me, and I shall be able to drive them out as the LORD said.” And Joshua blessed him, and gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh as an inheritance.” (Joshua 14:6-13 NKJV)
Both Barzillai and Caleb were invited by the King to cross over to the other side. Each old man responded differently.
Do you know God’s love for you only in your mind, or do you really know and experience it in your heart?
The devil will always try to make you feel unloved.
You need to keep on hearing and hearing the word of God and realize who you are in Christ.
We are born of God with incorruptible seed (in Greek “sperma” - literally sperm) and have His DNA in us.
Believe that you are truly a partaker of His divine life.
Put off the old man and put on the new man.
God wants you to dream again and follow Him over to the other side - the land of your inheritance.
