Pastor Joseph Prince Sermon Notes Online - New Creation Church Sermon Notes Online - Grace Revolution Tour at Lakewood Church - Becoming The Disciple Whom Jesus Loved
I John 4:10 - It's not about how much we love God, it's about how much God loves us.
"In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins." (I John 4:10 NKJV)
The Law condemns the best of us, whereas Grace saves the worst of us.
By the Law is the knowledge of sin, not the knowledge of God.
I John 4:19 - Now we love not because we first loved God, it's because He first loved us.
"We love Him because He first loved us." (I John 4:19 NKJV)
Practice the love of God for us, just like the Apostle John who called himself "The disciple whom Jesus loved".
Keep your eyes on God's fixed and unchanging love for us, and you will be settled.
God wants us to be Christ-occupied, not self-occupied.
When you sin, God looks at your sacrificial lamb, not at you. If you are a believer, you have Jesus, the Lamb of God.
The sacrificial lamb's righteousness is transferred to the offer-er (us), and the sins of the offer-er is transferred into the lamb. That's what happened at the cross. All that we deserved fell into Jesus, and we received Jesus's righteousness and all the blessings and favor of God.
Peter's name means "Rock" and it represents The Law. John's name means "Grace". John leaned on Jesus's love for him, whereas Peter boasted of his love for Jesus. Peter failed and denied Jesus thrice. John was the only disciple at the foot of the cross where Jesus hung.
We are to feed on God's love for us, not our love for Him.
Feel special because you are God's beloved. Don't feel like you're just a face in the crowd.
Luke 4:1-3 - The devil dropped out the word "beloved". It is counter-productive for him to remind Jesus that He is God's beloved. If you know and believe that you are God's beloved, the devil's temptations won't work on you.
"Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry. And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”" (Luke 4:1-3 NKJV)
Isaiah 54:9-10 - God swore that He will never be angry with us, nor rebuke us. This is a double-ironclad guarantee because God doesn't need to swear. His words are always true.
"“For this is like the waters of Noah to Me; For as I have sworn That the waters of Noah would no longer cover the earth, So have I sworn That I would not be angry with you, nor rebuke you. For the mountains shall depart And the hills be removed, But My kindness shall not depart from you, Nor shall My covenant of peace be removed,” Says the LORD, who has mercy on you." (Isaiah 54:9-10 NKJV)
When you boast of God's love for you, you will find that you love God more.
Genesis 22:2-3 - This is a picture of God offering Jesus as a sacrifice for us. You will not know how much God loves you until you know how much God loves Jesus, because He gave Jesus up for us.
"Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him." (Genesis 22:2-3 NKJV)
Genesis 22:9-13 - There was a ram provided for Abraham as a sacrificial substitute for his son, but no one provided God a substitute for Jesus at the cross. By this we know that God loves us: He did not withhold His Son, His only Son from us, but delivered Him up for us!
"Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the Angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” So he said, “Here I am.” And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.” Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son." (Genesis 22:9-13 NKJV)
Isaiah 53:1,10 - Jesus is the arm of the Lord. It pleased the Lord to bruise Jesus because God loves us.
"Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?... Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand." (Isaiah 53:1, 10 NKJV)
I John 4:18 - God's perfect love will cast out every fear.
"There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love." (I John 4:18 NKJV)
John 21:15-17 - When Jesus asked Peter whether he had a sacrificial love (agape) for Him. Peter now humbled, said that he only liked (filio) Jesus. It's all about God's love for us and not our love for Him.
"So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Feed My lambs.” He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep." (John 21:15-17 NKJV)
By receiving God's love, your faith will work. You will get healed.
I John 4:17 - God is not looking at you today to judge you, He is looking at Jesus to judge you. As Jesus is righteous, favored and loved right now, so are we right now, in this world! Jesus is strong, young and healthy forever, so are we in this world.
"Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world." (I John 4:17 NKJV)
II Corinthians 3:18 - We are transformed into Jesus's image by beholding Him, not by struggling.
"But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord." (II Corinthians 3:18 NKJV)
Matthew 14:25-32 - Keep your eyes on Jesus, and by beholding Him, you can do the supernatural. The devil is the accuser of the brethren, who wants to point out the flaws in us. The devil wants us to look to ourselves, but God wants us to look to Jesus. Point the devil to Jesus and say, "As He is, so are we in this world!"
"Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.” And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased." (Matthew 14:25-32 NKJV)
I Samuel 17:49-54 - David wasn't satisfied with just killing his enemy, he cut Goliath's head off. Rabbinical culture says that David brought Goliath's head and buried it at Golgotha on Mount Calvary. Jesus would later crush the head of a greater enemy, the devil at the same place!
"Then David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone; and he slung it and struck the Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. But there was no sword in the hand of David. Therefore David ran and stood over the Philistine, took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it. And when the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. Now the men of Israel and Judah arose and shouted, and pursued the Philistines as far as the entrance of the valley and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell along the road to Shaaraim, even as far as Gath and Ekron. Then the children of Israel returned from chasing the Philistines, and they plundered their tents. And David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his armor in his tent." (I Samuel 17:49-54 NKJV)
Luke 9:58 - Jesus had nowhere to rest while He was alive on earth.
"And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”" (Luke 9:58 NKJV)
John 19:30 - "bowing" is the same word in Hebrew as "lay" in Luke 9:58. Jesus finally found His rest in loving, saving, and healing us.
"So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit." (John 19:30 NKJV)
Romans 8:31-32 - God gave up Jesus, the best thing in heaven, for us. God gives us the best things of heaven, and withholds no blessings from us!
"What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?" (Romans 8:31-32 NKJV)
