How to Put On the Full Armor of God Every Day: Ephesians 6 Explained
Silencing the Serpent’s Lies — Part 4
By Milton Goh
Have you ever wondered whether you are properly protected against the enemy’s attacks?
Perhaps you have heard Christians say that you must put on the armor of God every morning before leaving your house.
That sounds like good spiritual advice. After all, the apostle Paul explicitly tells believers to put on the whole armor of God.
But here is an important question:
What does putting on the armor of God actually mean?
Do you have to visualize yourself wearing an invisible helmet, breastplate, and shield? Must you recite a particular prayer every morning? And if you forget, does that mean you are spiritually exposed for the rest of the day?
The Bible gives us a much more reassuring answer.
The armor of God is the spiritual protection God supplies to believers through His truth, righteousness, Gospel of peace, faith, salvation, Word, and Spirit-led prayer. We put it on by depending on Jesus Christ and living in the reality of what He has provided—not by performing a ritual to earn protection.
Let us examine Ephesians 6 carefully and discover how to stand firm against the enemy's schemes.
What Does the Bible Say About the Full Armor of God?
The apostle Paul writes:
"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil."
— Ephesians 6:10–11 (WEB)
Notice the first instruction.
Paul does not say, "Be strong in your own determination."
He says, "Be strong in the Lord."
This is the foundation of biblical spiritual warfare.
Your greatest defense against the enemy is not your intelligence, your ability to recognize every demonic strategy, or the number of hours you spend praying.
It is the strength of the Lord.
That distinction matters because Christians can unintentionally approach spiritual warfare with the same self-reliant mindset they use to overcome ordinary challenges.
They think, "If I become spiritually disciplined enough, the enemy will no longer be able to attack me."
But spiritual maturity does not mean becoming independent of God's help.
It means becoming increasingly dependent on Him.
Paul continues:
"For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood..."
— Ephesians 6:12 (WEB)
He goes on to describe spiritual rulers, authorities, and forces of evil.
The Christian life involves genuine spiritual opposition. However, this passage does not give us permission to treat every difficult person, unpleasant circumstance, or disappointing event as a demonic attack.
Our fellow human beings are not the ultimate enemy.
We are called to love people, pray for them, share the Gospel, and stand against evil without becoming consumed by fear.
Something else is worth noticing.
Throughout the passage, Paul repeatedly emphasizes standing.
We stand because Jesus Christ has already accomplished the decisive victory through His death and resurrection.
We are not trying to defeat Satan independently or accomplish a victory that Jesus failed to secure.
We are called to remain established in Christ's victory.
What Are the Six Pieces of the Armor of God?
Ephesians 6:14–17 describes six pieces of spiritual armor using the familiar equipment of a soldier.
Each image teaches us something important about remaining steadfast in Christ.
1. The Belt of Truth: Know What God Has Actually Said
"Stand therefore, having the utility belt of truth buckled around your waist..."
— Ephesians 6:14 (WEB)
In the ancient world, a belt helped a person secure loose garments and move freely.
A soldier who became entangled in his own clothing would be at a serious disadvantage.
Similarly, Christians who do not know what God's Word teaches can become entangled in wrong beliefs.
Consider this example.
Someone might tell you, "Because God is gracious, it doesn't matter how you live."
It sounds reassuring because God's grace is indeed abundant.
However, the conclusion is false.
Titus 2:11–12 teaches that the grace of God trains believers to reject ungodliness and live in a way that honors Him.
Grace is not permission to embrace destructive choices. It is God's favor and transforming power at work in us.
This illustrates how deception can use a true statement to support a false conclusion.
To put on the belt of truth, become familiar with Scripture in its proper context.
Learn what Jesus accomplished through His finished work. Receive sound Bible teaching. Examine claims carefully instead of accepting them simply because they sound spiritual.
The more established you become in God's truth, the easier it becomes to recognize misleading interpretations.
The belt of truth reminds us that a believer who knows God's Word is better prepared to recognize the serpent's lies.
2. The Breastplate of Righteousness: Guard Your Heart with What Jesus Has Done
The breastplate protected a soldier's vital organs.
Spiritually, the righteousness God provides in Christ protects us against the accusations that seek to undermine our confidence before Him.
Romans 5:17 describes righteousness as a gift received through Jesus Christ.
This means that your justification before God is not a reward for achieving flawless behavior.
It rests upon Jesus' finished work.
Of course, Christians should pursue holiness and obey God's Word.
But obedience is the fruit of belonging to Christ, not the price we pay to become acceptable to Him.
Imagine someone who has genuinely repented of a sinful choice but continues believing that God will never welcome them again.
That person needs to remember that Jesus is the basis of their forgiveness and acceptance.
They can acknowledge their wrongdoing, receive God's mercy, make necessary amends, and continue walking with Him.
They do not need to remain imprisoned by self-condemnation.
I explored this subject more deeply in my earlier article, How to Silence the Serpent's Lie When You Feel Like You're Not Good Enough.
Put on the breastplate of righteousness by resting your confidence in Jesus' righteousness rather than your fluctuating performance.
3. The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace: Stand Firm in Your Reconciliation with God
"...and having fitted your feet with the preparation of the Good News of peace..."
— Ephesians 6:15 (WEB)
A soldier needs stable footing.
Without it, even a well-equipped warrior can stumble.
The Gospel provides believers with firm spiritual footing because Jesus has reconciled us to God.
Romans 5:1 teaches that, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Notice that this is more than a pleasant feeling.
It describes a restored relationship with God.
Your emotional state may change throughout the day.
You may feel peaceful in the morning and overwhelmed by a difficult situation in the afternoon.
But the peace with God secured through Christ does not disappear simply because your emotions change.
This is wonderful news!
The enemy wants believers to become unstable through fear, accusation, and uncertainty about God's acceptance.
The Gospel establishes us in something far more dependable than our feelings.
There is another dimension to these shoes.
The Gospel of peace is not only something we stand upon. It is also a message we are prepared to share.
When you respond to hostility with gentleness, pray for someone who has hurt you, or tell another person about Jesus, you are expressing the peace that Christ has brought.
To wear the Gospel of peace is to stand firmly in your reconciliation with God and remain ready to share that peace with others.
4. The Shield of Faith: Extinguish the Enemy's Fiery Darts
Paul writes:
"...taking up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one."
— Ephesians 6:16 (WEB)
What are these fiery darts?
They can include temptation, deceptive suggestions, accusations, and fears that seek to draw believers away from trusting God.
Not every negative or unwanted thought comes directly from Satan. Our thinking is also influenced by memories, habits, emotions, personal struggles, and the surrounding world.
Nevertheless, the shield of faith is relevant whenever something challenges our confidence in God's truth.
Suppose you have been praying about a difficult situation for several weeks, but nothing seems to have changed.
A discouraging conclusion might arise:
"God must not care about me. Otherwise, He would have answered already."
Faith does not require you to deny that the situation is painful.
Instead, faith remembers what the Gospel has already revealed about God's character.
God demonstrated His love by giving His Son for us.
Therefore, a delayed answer does not establish that He has stopped loving us.
Our confidence is grounded in Christ, even when we cannot explain everything that is happening.
There is also an encouraging communal dimension to this image.
Ancient soldiers could stand together with their shields, protecting one another.
Likewise, Christians are not meant to fight spiritual battles in isolation.
Sometimes a fellow believer's encouragement, prayer, or timely reminder of Scripture strengthens you when you feel weary.
The shield of faith is not confidence in your ability to believe perfectly. It is confidence in the faithful God who is the object of your faith.
Even trembling faith can look to a mighty Savior.
5. The Helmet of Salvation: Protect Your Mind with Eternal Hope
The helmet protects the soldier's head.
Paul writes:
"And take the helmet of salvation..."
— Ephesians 6:17 (WEB)
First Thessalonians 5:8 calls this helmet the hope of salvation.
This is significant because biblical salvation includes a wonderful future.
Through faith in Jesus, believers have already received forgiveness and reconciliation with God.
The Holy Spirit is also transforming us as we grow in our Christian walk.
Yet we still await the complete redemption of our bodies when Jesus returns.
One day, death will be defeated completely, and God's people will enjoy resurrection life with Christ.
Why is this hope important during spiritual warfare?
Because despair often speaks as though present suffering is the whole story.
When you are facing an overwhelming challenge, it is easy to imagine that nothing will ever improve.
The hope of salvation reminds us that our circumstances do not have the final word.
Jesus does.
This does not mean Christians must suppress grief, deny mental health struggles, or pretend that hardship is easy.
A believer can experience depression, exhaustion, or deep sorrow without having failed to put on the armor of God.
In such seasons, prayer, the support of other believers, and appropriate professional care can all be valuable.
The helmet of salvation directs our attention beyond temporary circumstances toward the future secured by Jesus.
Put on the helmet by remembering that your ultimate future belongs to Christ, not to fear.
6. The Sword of the Spirit: Respond with God's Word
Paul identifies the final piece of armor:
"...the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God..."
— Ephesians 6:17 (WEB)
This image is especially important when discussing how to resist the devil.
Think about how Jesus responded when Satan tempted Him in the wilderness.
In Matthew 4, Jesus repeatedly answered the tempter using Scripture.
He did not accept the devil's suggestions or allow Scripture to be twisted into a justification for disobedience.
He remained faithful to the Father.
This gives us a practical example.
If temptation suggests, "Nobody will discover what I am about to do, so it cannot hurt anyone," we can remember that sin remains destructive even when it is hidden.
If accusation says, "Your past is too terrible for God to forgive," we can return to the Gospel of Christ's sufficient sacrifice.
If fear says, "God has abandoned you," we can remember His promises of faithful presence.
Using the sword of the Spirit is not about treating Bible verses as magical incantations.
The power is not in how forcefully you recite a particular sentence.
It is God's Word, understood faithfully and applied through the Holy Spirit's help, that exposes falsehood and directs us toward obedience.
The sword of the Spirit is God's Word brought to bear upon our lives through the Holy Spirit.
Read it, believe it, pray according to it, and practice what it teaches.
Is Prayer the Seventh Piece of the Armor of God?
Some teaching materials describe prayer as the seventh piece of spiritual armor.
However, Paul does not identify prayer as another piece of equipment in the same way that he identifies the belt, breastplate, shoes, shield, helmet, and sword.
Instead, he tells believers to pray throughout their spiritual warfare.
"...with all prayer and requests, praying at all times in the Spirit..."
— Ephesians 6:18 (WEB)
Prayer is woven into the entire experience of standing firm.
We depend on the Lord through prayer.
We seek wisdom through prayer.
We bring our fears and temptations to Him through prayer.
We intercede for other believers through prayer.
Paul also instructs Christians to pray for all the saints.
This is another reminder that spiritual warfare is not an individual competition to become the strongest Christian.
We belong to the body of Christ.
Praying in the Spirit means praying with the Holy Spirit's help and guidance. It includes understandable prayers, intercession, worship, thanksgiving, and, for believers who exercise the gift, praying in tongues.
The Holy Spirit helps us in our weaknesses, as Romans 8:26–27 teaches.
You do not need to pray perfectly to be heard by your heavenly Father.
Jesus has already opened the way for you to approach Him.
How Do You Put On the Armor of God Every Morning?
Now that we understand the biblical meaning of the armor, let us make it practical.
You do not need an elaborate ceremony or a fixed number of minutes.
Here is a simple way to prepare your heart each day:
Begin with Jesus, not the enemy. Thank the Father for saving you through Christ. Remember that your strength comes from the Lord.
Receive God's truth. Read or meditate on a passage of Scripture. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand and apply it correctly.
Remember your standing in Christ. You have been reconciled to God through Jesus. Your acceptance before Him is not something you must purchase through religious performance.
Entrust your concerns to God. Pray about your responsibilities, relationships, temptations, and decisions. Ask for His wisdom and strength, and remember other believers in prayer.
Take the next faithful step. When you encounter pressure, refuse deception, pursue peace, practice obedience, and rely on the Holy Spirit rather than your own strength.
These practices help you remain attentive to God's provision.
But they are not a formula that guarantees a trouble-free day.
You might have a rushed morning because your child needs attention, an urgent situation arises, or you oversleep.
That does not mean you have automatically lost God's protection.
The armor of God is not activated by successfully completing a morning ritual. It describes the life of faith and dependence God calls His people to live.
You can pray during your commute, meditate on Scripture during your lunch break, and seek the Holy Spirit's guidance in the middle of a difficult conversation.
Walking with Jesus is not confined to your morning devotion.
One Overlooked Lesson: Paul Asked for Boldness, Not an Easier Life
There is a beautiful detail near the end of Ephesians 6 that Christians sometimes overlook.
After describing the spiritual armor, Paul asks the believers to pray for him.
What does he request?
He asks that he would receive the right words and boldness to proclaim the Gospel.
He describes himself as an ambassador in chains (Ephesians 6:19–20).
Think about that.
Paul was facing imprisonment, yet his concern was that he would speak faithfully about Jesus.
He did not present the armor of God as a guarantee that he would never suffer opposition.
He understood that God's strength could sustain him even while he was experiencing hardship.
This gives us a more complete picture of victory in spiritual warfare.
Sometimes standing firm means resisting temptation.
Sometimes it means refusing bitterness.
Sometimes it means continuing to preach the Gospel when doing so comes at a personal cost.
And sometimes it means holding on to the hope of Christ while waiting for a difficult situation to change.
Our circumstances do not always reveal the extent of God's work in us.
Paul's chains did not mean that Christ had abandoned him.
Your present hardship does not automatically mean that the enemy has defeated you.
A Prayer for Standing Firm in the Armor of God
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for loving me and bringing me into Your family through Jesus Christ.
Thank You that my strength comes from You and not from my own ability.
Establish my heart in Your truth. Remind me that I have been justified through faith in Jesus and reconciled to You by His finished work.
Help me remain steadfast in faith when fears, temptations, and discouraging thoughts arise.
Let the hope of salvation guard my mind, and teach me to use Your Word faithfully through the help of the Holy Spirit.
Give me wisdom to recognize deception, courage to obey Your leading, and love for the people around me.
Strengthen my fellow believers who are facing difficulties today.
May my life bring glory to Jesus Christ.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
Frequently Asked Questions About the Armor of God
What are the six pieces of the armor of God and their meanings?
According to Ephesians 6:14–17, they are the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes of the Gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, and sword of the Spirit. Together they describe the provision God gives Christians to stand firm through truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and His Word.
Do Christians need to put on the armor of God every day?
Christians should continually rely on God's truth and strength. Daily Scripture reading, prayer, faith, and obedience help cultivate that dependence. However, the Bible does not prescribe a mandatory morning ritual for activating spiritual armor.
Can a Christian still experience spiritual attacks while wearing the armor of God?
Yes. Ephesians 6 is written precisely because Christians encounter spiritual opposition. God's armor equips believers to stand firm; it does not promise that every form of temptation, suffering, or difficulty will disappear.
How does the armor of God protect against Satan?
The armor equips believers to resist deception, temptation, accusation, and discouragement by relying on God's truth and promises, trusting in Christ's righteousness, remaining established in the Gospel, and praying through the Holy Spirit's help.
What is the most powerful weapon in spiritual warfare?
Christians do not possess an independent power greater than God. Their confidence rests in Jesus Christ, who has already triumphed over the powers of darkness. Ephesians identifies God's Word as the sword of the Spirit, while emphasizing dependence on the Lord's strength and persistent prayer.
What should I do if I feel spiritually weak?
Remember that your strength comes from the Lord, not from achieving spiritual perfection. Come to Jesus in prayer, receive encouragement from Scripture, and allow mature believers to support you. Weakness is an invitation to depend more deeply on God's grace, not proof that He has abandoned you.
The Armor of God Is About Standing in Christ, Not Living in Fear
When we understand the whole armor of God, something wonderful happens.
Spiritual warfare begins to look less like an exhausting struggle to become powerful enough to defeat the enemy.
Instead, we see that God has already provided what His people need to stand.
We have His truth.
We have righteousness through Christ.
We have peace with God.
We can trust His faithfulness.
We have the hope of salvation.
We have His living Word and the help of the Holy Spirit.
We also have the fellowship and prayers of our brothers and sisters in Christ.
None of these are rewards we obtain by becoming spiritually impressive.
They are part of God's gracious provision for His people.
The serpent wants us to live distracted, intimidated, and uncertain about God's goodness.
But Jesus has already revealed the Father's heart and accomplished our redemption.
Do not measure your spiritual security by how intensely you feel protected today.
Look to the One who has saved you.
The Christian life is not about becoming more conscious of the devil. It is about becoming more established in Jesus Christ.
Stand firm in Him.

Customer Reviews for the first edition of “Silencing the Serpent”:
"Thank you brother Milton for this amazing book. It has been much needed in my current season when I'm going through so much demonic attack through people supposedly close to me. God has used the Word to remind me that He is with me ALL the way and that I should have NO fear. No weapon formed against me can prosper and every tongue raised against me in judgement I have the power to condemn with ALL the weapons of warfare given to us by God. I'm blessed and grateful to God for using you to assure me of His Mighty Presence--that He will never leave me nor forsake me. Hallelujah & Amen!" - Shally Joseph from India
"Milton Goh, I downloaded your book and it was God's appointed time for my breakthrough. He destroyed a stronghold in my life that was rooted on a lie. A light just went on in an instant and the Lord uprooted a wrong belief. I struggled now for years with a relationship and I believed a lie that a sin I committed in the past was unforgivable, and I judged the other person for the same sin. It was unconscious and I didn't know that I was bound by this lie. When I read a chapter in this book, about strongholds in the mind, the Holy Spirit revealed it to me in a flash and it was as if the walls of Jericho were tumbling down! Thanks for this book--it is from the Lord!" - Antoinette Hurter Keyser from South Africa
"A short testimony to share after reading the chapter about girding up our loins with the TRUTH. After reading it, I met some of my colleagues and the first thing they told me was, "You are fat, you put on weight," not even "Hi, hello, how are you..." At first, I was sad over the remarks. But almost immediately, I was reminded of truth of God's Word which says that "I am highly favored, beloved of Jesus, and Jesus sees me as fit and healthy. I am not defined by what others say, but by what Jesus says!" After that, I carried on with work and went for my run and managed to complete close to 5km. Something which I have never done before. All praise and glory to Jesus. Thank you, brother Milton for your teaching on the armor of God shared in this book! - Alwin Seeni from Singapore
"Thank you brother Milton. Your insights are a blessing. God bless you with many more beautiful revelations." - Shirley Thomas from India
“Anointed book. I am fully blessed by this book. My heart has has been filled with peace and joy since I read it. Wrong beliefs and strongholds are loosing their hold on me.” - Loise from the USA
