Wearing Kids Face Masks in School - Protection from COVID-19 and other Sicknesses

Summary: Wearing kids face masks in school has been effective at reducing the cases of children falling sick. Your little one can wear a mask and yet look stylish and adorable!

My 4 year old daughter Maeleth recently started school on 1 September 2020. For the past 4 years, she has been with my wife and I at home, 'homeschooled' in a way.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation, it is mandatory for children to wear kids face masks to school.

It is compulsory in Singapore to wear face masks when you go out, whether you are an adult or a child. I believe this prevention measure is why the cases of COVID-19 in Singapore have dropped to single-digit new cases each day.

Even in preschools, teachers and parents are realizing that their little ones are staying healthy and not falling sick as often as before.

The law requiring children to wear masks in preschool will be lifted soon, but Mae's school sent all parents a letter, saying that they strong recommend that the children continue wearing kids face masks to school because it has been effective in keeping them healthy.

It really sucks when little ones fall sick. Besides incurring medical bills, there is the stress of caring for a cranky, ill child.

Wearing a mask is effective protection because kids don't fully understand the importance of practicing hygiene. They touch their eyes and mouth with dirty hands, and pick their boogers whenever they feel like doing so.

Besides that, there is the transmission of germs when fellow student sneeze or cough in other students' faces.

Nowadays, there are beautiful kids face mask designs available for purchase. Let's look at some!

1) Disposable versus Reusable Kids Face Masks

Personally, I prefer to get reusable kids face masks because you just buy it one time, and you can use it over and over by washing it after each use.

Reusable kids face masks also have nicer designs, many being adorable and attractive. In a time where half of your face is covered, your mask becomes an important accessory to showcase your personality or style.

Disposable kids face masks are plain looking, and remind one of a hospital or clinic. The reusable ones are more fun and interesting.

2) Breathability

Choosing masks based on design alone may not be the best idea. Another factor to consider is the breathability. Do you feel like you are suffocating in the mask, or can you breathe freely and well?

If you can breathe too well, it could indicate that the mask is not really effective at protecting you from airborne germs. There must be a good balance such that you can wear the face mask for the whole day and be okay with it.

Another cool idea would be to get a kids neck gaiter to serve the same purpose as a kids face mask.

Your little one can even pretend he or she is a ninja. Try both the face mask and neck gaiter and see which fits better and is more comfortable.

It is a good idea to incorporate these face accessories into daily life to prevent them from falling sick.

They don't have to look ugly in them if you choose stylish looking ones.

3) Consider Getting a Kids Face Shield

If your little one finds kids face masks or neck gaiters too restrictive, consider getting a kids face shield instead.

I like the following design because it is worn like glasses. This is easier to keep on rather than wearing a strap to the back of the head which is more uncomfortable.

This is an interesting kids face shield because it's worn like glasses instead of using a strap at the back of the head. More comfortable!

However, do take note that face shields protect your kid's face from splashes and rains of saliva, but are not effective at blocking out airborne viruses and bacteria.

On top of that, your little one will still have access to his or her eyes, nose and mouth, so there's still the risk of them transmitting germs through touch.

Which face accessory do you prefer: kids face mask, kids neck gaiter, or kids face shield? Let me know in the comments below. Praying that you and your little ones stay safe!
