Who are the Two Witnesses during the Great Tribulation? Moses and Elijah is the Wrong Combination

Who are the Two Witnesses during the Great Tribulation? Moses and Elijah is the Wrong Combination

“And I will grant authority to My two witnesses, and they will prophesy for twelve hundred and sixty days (forty-two months; three and one-half years), dressed in sackcloth.”” (REVELATION 11:3 AMP)

After my pastor friend asked me about my opinion on this topic, I dug into God’s word to study about the identity of the two witnesses who will rise up during the Great Tribulation, and here are my findings.

Many people believe them to be Moses and Elijah, and I’ve ever read articles online saying the same thing, leading me to believe that before.

This is probably due to the fact that these two witnesses will be moving in the same judgment anointing as Moses and Elijah when we look at the nature of the miracles they performed:

“And if anyone wants to harm them, fire comes out of their mouth and devours their enemies; so if anyone wants to harm them, he must be killed in this way. These [two witnesses] have the power [from God] to shut up the sky, so that no rain will fall during the days of their prophesying [regarding judgment and salvation]; and they have power over the waters (seas, rivers) to turn them into blood, and to strike the earth with every [kind of] plague, as often as they wish. (REVELATION 11:5-6 AMP)

The fire and shutting up of the sky to have no rain reminds us of Elijah’s ministry.

The water turning into blood and striking the earth with plagues reminds us of Moses’ ministry.

However now after studying deeper into this topic, I don’t think that Moses can be one of the two witnesses anymore.

Who are the two witnesses during the Great Tribulation? Are they Moses and Elijah?

Why Moses cannot be one of the two witnesses

Elijah never experienced death and was taken up into a section of heaven:

“And when they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you before I am taken from you.” And Elisha said, “Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.” He said, “You have asked for a difficult thing. However, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so.” As they continued along and talked, behold, a chariot of fire with horses of fire [appeared suddenly and] separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. Elisha saw it and cried out, “My father, my father, the chariot of Israel and its horsemen!” And he no longer saw Elijah. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them into two pieces [in grief].” (2 KINGS 2:9-12 AMP)

On the other hand, God’s word confirms that Moses fell asleep in death:

“So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD. And He buried him in the valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor; but no man knows where his burial place is to this day. Although Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, his eyesight was not dim, nor his natural strength abated.” (DEUTERONOMY 34:5-7 AMP)

It says in the passage above that “He” buried Moses, indicating that Moses’ body was not buried by human hands, but through an agent of God.
This is further confirmed by the fact that no human knows where Moses’ burial place is.

I believe that the Archangel Michael is the one who buried Moses’ body:

“But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil (Satan), and arguing about the body of Moses, did not dare bring an abusive condemnation against him, but [simply] said, “The Lord rebuke you!”” (JUDE 1:9 AMP)

And when Michael was in the process of burying Moses’ body, Satan appeared, trying to disrupt the process.

The writer of the epistle to the Hebrews revealed this truth:

“And just as it is appointed and destined for all men to die once and after this [comes certain] judgment,”(HEBREWS 9:27 AMP)

Since Moses has already died once, he can’t be one of the two witnesses because the two of them will die in a battle against the Antichrist (the Beast from the Bottomless Pit):

“When they have finished their testimony and given their evidence, the beast that comes up out of the abyss (bottomless pit) will wage war with them, and overcome them and kill them. And their dead bodies will lie exposed in the open street of the great city (Jerusalem), which in a spiritual sense is called [by the symbolic and allegorical names of] Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified.”(REVELATION 11:7-8 AMP)

Because the Rapture happens before the Great Tribulation begins, by the time of the two witnesses appearing, Moses would already be in his glorified body, never to experience death again:

“Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” (I Corinthians 15:51-58 NKJV)

About the Book:

One day when I was singing praises to God, an image floated up in my spirit: a big and beautiful sandcastle being washed away by the waves from the sea. God was teaching me the futility of holding tightly onto worldly possessions because like the sandcastle, they won't last, and one day will cease to exist.

He taught me from His word to focus on Him and by doing so, I would reap great eternal rewards before Jesus' throne at the start of the Millennium. These rewards will last forever and can't be destroyed or stolen.

It is my prayer that the revelations in this book will help you to live with a focus on the things above where God is, fulfill your God-given calling in life, be happier and to accumulate more eternal rewards to your account.

In this Book, you will learn about:

- Heavenly investment advice and the futility of worldly pursuits from a trillionaire in the Bible

- Why God has to reward us in order to be righteous

- When and how God will destroy the current earth and sky to make way for new ones

- The types of fireproof works that earn eternal rewards at the end of time

- The abundant rewards of doing good works while abiding by the non-disclosure agreement between God and you

- The difference between the temporary places of torment: Sheol and Abaddon

- Who is the Antichrist and his name revealed in the Bible

- What is the Mark of the Beast and why it disqualifies its recipients from receiving salvation

- The different judgments at the throne of Jesus Christ and what it means for you as a believer

- How to fulfill your calling and maximize your gifts to receive the best eternal rewards

Testimonials about the contents of this book:

"Sandcastles Don't Last Forever is very well written, its message loud and clear. Milton Goh gives common-sense insight on often confusing Scripture, which is much appreciated in these troubled times. My understanding of the Bible has definitely improved."

- Mike Garrett, first Editor/ Publisher for Stephen King and Author of Christian Novel "Innocence Denied", from USA

"This book is absolutely breathtaking. We don't work to be saved but were created to do good works. I am so energized and excited to know God values our works and we will be rewarded. This is all Glory to Jesus... I cant wait to throw my crowns at his feet and thank him for saving my life!" - Evangelist Michael Clark from USA

"Dear Milton Goh, I truly thank our Abba, Father for the revelations in this book. It is so amazing how I begin to discover important verses in the Bible that I have never read. That instead of following riches, with sleepless nights, and actually shortening our lives, we are just to 'Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ', and 'Love one another'. How beautiful to find out that actually in the Bible there is both 'Earthly or Worldly Investment Wisdom' and 'Eternal Investment Wisdom' according to the revelations here from Ecclesiastes 5:14-17 WEB)!; “It seems like Solomon was not only wise at earning material riches but also at earning eternal riches.” All the glory to our Lord Jesus Christ! God bless you Milton Goh for such a wonderful book!" - Nitta Nierra from Belgium

“Thank you Milton. I have just finished reading “Sandcastles Don’t Last Forever”. It’s such a good book that's filled with God's word. I love it very much. Might read again if I have the time. Thanks so much!” - Mally Chai from Singapore

"I'm reading this book and loving it! The revelations of the Gospel truth shared and it's life applications are absolutely amazing! The identity of the two witnesses revealed

If this is so, then who are the two witnesses? This is the clue as to who they are:

“These [witnesses] are the two olive trees and the two lampstands which stand before the Lord of the earth.” (REVELATION 11:4 AMP)

A similar visual imagery of lampstand and two olive trees and pattern of speech is used in the Book of Zechariah:

“And the angel who was speaking with me came back and awakened me, like a man who is awakened out of his sleep. He said to me, “What do you see?” I said, “I see, and behold, a lampstand all of gold, with its bowl [for oil] on the top of it and its seven lamps on it with seven spouts belonging to each of the lamps which are on the top of it. And there are two olive trees by it, one on the right side of the bowl and the other on its left side [supplying it continuously with oil].”... Then I said to him [who was speaking with me], “What are these two olive trees on the right side of the lampstand and on its left?” And a second time I said to him, “What are these two olive branches which are beside the two golden pipes by which the golden oil is emptied?” And he answered me, “Do you not know what these are?” And I said, “No, my lord.” Then he said, “These are the two sons of fresh oil [Joshua the high priest and Zerubbabel the prince of Judah] who are standing by the Lord of the whole earth [as His anointed ones].”” (ZECHARIAH 4:1-3, 11-14 AMP)

At that time for the particular purpose of rebuilding the temple for God, Joshua the High Priest and Zerubbabel the royal prince were the two anointed ones for the job.

I believe that the two witnesses during the Great Tribulation will be Elijah and Enoch, who are in now in a sense  standing before the Lord in a section of heaven, anointed and awaiting the appointed time of their end-time ministry.

Read what Jesus said after the transfiguration on the high mountain:

“And as they were going down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Do not tell anyone what you have seen until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.” The disciples asked Him, “Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” He answered and said, “Elijah is coming and will restore all things; but I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not recognize him, but did to him as they wished. The Son of Man is also going to suffer at their hands.” Then the disciples understood that He had spoken to them about John the Baptist.” (MATTHEW 17:9-13 AMP)

Jesus said that Elijah is coming and will restore all things. Elijah will be one of the two witnesses.

Like Moses, Enoch also had a ministry of proclaiming God’s judgment:

“It was about these people that Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied, when he said, “Look, the Lord came with myriads of His holy ones to execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly of all the ungodly deeds they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh and cruel things ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”” (JUDE 1:14-15 AMP)

God Blessed Enoch with a private Rapture:

“By faith [that pleased God] Enoch was caught up and taken to heaven so that he would not have a glimpse of death; AND HE WAS NOT FOUND BECAUSE GOD HAD TAKEN HIM; for even before he was taken [to heaven], he received the testimony [still on record] that he had walked with God and pleased Him.” (HEBREWS 11:5 AMP)

If God loved Enoch so much, He could have just blessed him with great earthly blessings instead of taking him up to a section of heaven right?
I believe that God chose Enoch to be one of the two witnesses during the Great Tribulation.

Both Enoch and Elijah have never died yet, so their appointed time to die will be in the battle with the Antichrist.

You may be thinking: “but those believers who will still be alive on earth when the Rapture happens, they won’t ever experience death right?”

Actually they have already died when they believed in Jesus as their Lord and Savior:

“Certainly not! How can we, the very ones who died to sin, continue to live in it any longer? Or are you ignorant of the fact that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We have therefore been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory and power of the Father, we too might walk habitually in newness of life [abandoning our old ways]. For if we have become one with Him [permanently united] in the likeness of His death, we will also certainly be [one with Him and share fully] in the likeness of His resurrection. We know that our old self [our human nature without the Holy Spirit] was nailed to the cross with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin. For the person who has died [with Christ] has been freed from [the power of] sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live [together] with Him,” (ROMANS 6:2-8 AMP)

When we believed in Jesus as Lord and Savior, our spirits shared in Jesus' death at the cross and are now already possessing eternal life:

““I assure you and most solemnly say to you, the person who hears My word [the one who heeds My message], and believes and trusts in Him who sent Me, has (possesses now) eternal life [that is, eternal life actually begins--the believer is transformed], and does not come into judgment and condemnation, but has passed [over] from death into life.” (JOHN 5:24 AMP)

God will send Elijah and Enoch back to earth for the purpose of proclaiming judgment and salvation during the Great Tribulation - they will be a source of light in the deep darkness -
A provision of God’s mercy even amidst the severe judgment upon the earth.

At that time they will be easily recognized because they will be dressed in sackcloth and performing the mighty miracles of judgment as prophesied in God’s word.

Through their anointing, Elijah and Enoch will bring glory to the Lord.
Their ministry will once again prove that the world continually rejects the grace of God and that their suffering in the Great Tribulation is completely just.

It will demonstrate that even though God reaches out to them in mercy with signs and wonders, the hard hearts of evil men will be unable to repent and receive Him.

Oh how patient and exceedingly kind our Lord is, that He puts up with the wickedness of these evil men and still keeps trying to snatch their souls out of the lake of fire, even though they keep rejecting His goodness.

Truly God sends no one to Hell - people send themselves there by committing the unpardonable sin: repeatedly denying that Jesus is Lord all the way up to their point of death.

Prayer of the Day:
Dear Abba Father, we desire to walk in a powerful anointing like the two witnesses to reach the lost and strengthen Your children. We yield ourselves to You and allow the Holy Spirit to be upon us, to use us powerfully as vessels for His glory. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen!

You pose some interesting points and debate on the two witnesses. You've given me much to ponder on. That's what is great about online articles and connecting with people we'll never meet in person. We get a chance to read their words and thus hear their thoughts and know their heart. Thanks for sharing!

This is really interesting! You did a great job pulling together a lot of different scriptures. I've never really put much stock into Enoch since he seems so peripheral and minor, but you've really made me think. Keep it up! You're feeding my inner Bible nerd 😀

That's so interesting. (I would remind you that Lazarus and a few others died twice.) But part of the Jewish Passover includes waiting for the return of Elijah.

And you've done a great job establishing evidence for your case. Great post.

Nice points, however, the so-called Rapture does not happen before the 7 years of Tribulation, but at the 7th shofar. Please do not preach this false belief because when many from the church see that they are still here, they will fall away.

Hi Milton

Just want to know how you reconcile the proposed view with v. 12-13 of Mat 17 said Elijah has come as John the Baptist in that first century period. That Elijah seems the one prophesied in Malachi 3-4.

I say to you that Elijah HAS ALREADY COME, and they did not recognize him, but did to him as they wished. The Son of Man is also going to suffer at their hands.” Then the disciples understood that He had spoken to them about JOHN THE BAPTIST.

Mal 4:5 was even cited in Luk 1:17 It is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to the children, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, so as to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

Hi Phil, you didn’t quote it in context.

“He answered and said, “Elijah is coming and will restore all things; but I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not recognize him, but did to him as they wished. The Son of Man is also going to suffer at their hands.” Then the disciples understood that He had spoken to them about John the Baptist.””

Jesus actually said that 1) Elijah is coming and will restore all things and that 2) Elijah has come already.

1) is referring to the future when Elijah will come again as one of the two witnesses.

2) is referring to Jesus’ time when John the Baptist came with the anointing mantle that belonged to Elijah. Previously the anointing was upon Elisha too.

You see, Jesus mentioned two comings of Elijah, not just one.

Thanks for the response Milton. Now I see where you're getting that view. Im just curious that there may be one Elijah as Mal 4 was applied in Luk 1:17. Mal 4 does not seem to be about anointing but about judgment. Anyways, I do appreciate your response.

It really is awesome when one sees brothers like yourself delving into The Word so deeply: It is so vast, fulfilling, revealing and awesome it gives us a foretaste of the eternity we will spend with The Living Word Himself being able to ask, learn new things and be blown way, praise God. I may have missed something but how do we know that Moses' body being rightly claimed by Michael didnt mean it was also raised up to life by God after that? I mean Moses and Elijah appeared to Jesus when He was transfigured in their meeting of the heavenly feast of booths. I would love to hear your thoughts on that

Hi Glen,

Moses could have come back from Heaven in a spirit form. In Luke 16, in the parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man, we learn that there is a chasm between Heaven and Hell that cannot be crossed, but it doesn’t say that a spirit in Heaven cannot return to the earth, especially when it’s God the Father doing it.

Besides, who is the one who willed for Moses to die without crossing the Jordan River? It was God Himself. It would be strange for Him to cause Moses to die in the wilderness and then immediately raise him back to life.
Why not just take Moses into Heaven without letting him die?
If so, is there an important typology we need to learn from this?

We have a record that Moses died but no clear record that he was raised back to life.

In Revelation 8:1-2 the tribulation has already started the 7th seal has been broken THEN the trumpets are given to the angels. AFTER the tribulation had already started. Yes Revelation 3:10 (only one of the two churches that Jesus does not say "but this I have against you" and give an ultimatum) does say that He will keep them from the hour of temptation. But this is not the rapture. In Revelation 11:3-4 tells us that he give power to His two witnesses. Describes the 2 witnesses as 1) the two olive trees and 2) the two lampstands. Who are the two lampstands? Revelation 1:20 tells us that lampstands are churches. Remember, there were only two churches (lampstands) that Jesus didn't give an ultimatum to-Philadelphia and Smyrna. So what does this have to do with us and with the rapture? Because, the letters (Revelation 2 & 3) are for our benefit. It gives us a way to see what is acceptable and what we as believers need to overcome. By filtering our beliefs, doctrines and walk with the Messiah thru these letters and overcoming what each church is told to overcome we can become current members of the churches of Philadelphia and Smyrna-the two lampstands of Revelation 11! It is them (hopefully us) who will be kept from the tribulation by given the power to prophecy as was given to Elijah and Moses and Joshua! During those 3.5 years we (hopefully) will not be hurt by any of the seals and trumpets. The two witnesses will be "sleeping" during the last 3.5 years and be ressurected and raptured at the end of the 7 year period.
