The Eye and Ear Gates

Hi brothers and sisters in Christ! In this daily devotional, I’ll be sharing how a believer manifests a blessed life, by looking at the individual body parts that lead to this end results - for the sake of discussion, I'm calling it the "body cycle of blessedness"!

When we read or listen to the word of God, that is the beginning of the cycle of blessing.

The Book of Proverbs is a book filled with God’s wisdom.
It says that the beginning of wisdom is to prioritize and get wisdom in God’s word.

It is extremely important to filter what info we take in with our eyes.
The eye is one of the gates leading to our heart.
We allow either light or darkness in through this gate:

““The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!” (Matthew 6:22-23 NKJV)

When we read the word of God, we are flooding our bodies with the light of God. What we read goes down into our hearts. We will learn more about this as we go along!

Our ear is another gate that leads to our heart:

“The ear that listens to and learns from the life-giving rebuke (reprimand, censure) Will remain among the wise. He who neglects and ignores instruction and discipline despises himself, But he who learns from rebuke acquires understanding [and grows in wisdom].” (PROVERBS 15:31-32 AMP)

When we listen to the word of God being preached, the words also go into our heart.
If we keep them there and meditate on them, they will lead to understanding and wisdom.

Specifically what portions of God’s word should we read, listen to and meditate on?
I believe that passages that uplift God’s grace have a powerful cleansing effect as mentioned in this verse:

“By mercy and lovingkindness and truth [not superficial ritual] wickedness is cleansed from the heart, And by the fear of the LORD one avoids evil.” (PROVERBS 16:6 AMP)

The words “mercy and lovingkidness and truth” in Hebrew are “hesed ve emet” which means grace and truth.
Allowing words of true grace through our eye and ear gates has a powerful purifying purpose in our hearts.
We should be doing it daily, like taking a bath.

The Heart

The Bible tells us to diligently guard our hearts.
That’s why it’s so important to monitor what we allow through the eye and ear gates - the info we let in reaches our hearts!

“My son, pay attention to my words and be willing to learn; Open your ears to my sayings. Do not let them escape from your sight; Keep them in the center of your heart. For they are life to those who find them, And healing and health to all their flesh. Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.” (PROVERBS 4:20-23 AMP)

The passage above tells us that what we keep in our hearts produces a real effect on our bodies and in our lives: either for good or bad.

Keeping in the center of your heart means to place as number one priority and to think about it constantly.

One way to keep the cycle of blessing going in your life is to ensure that God’s word is always in the center-place of your heart.

You can do this by choosing a verse to meditate on daily and keep visualizing and thinking about it wherever you go and whatever you do.
As long as you keep it in the center of your heart, it is producing many benefits in your life.

You see, what you keep in your heart does not just remain there and do nothing.
It overflows out of your heart through the words you speak with your mouth.
What you think about a lot influences what you say and do. Jesus said so Himself:

“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” (Luke 6:45 NKJV)

The Mouth

What you keep in your heart will teach your mouth how to speak.
If your heart is full of God’s words of grace, that will translate to spoken words that cause healing and wholeness in your body.

“The heart of the wise instructs his mouth [in wisdom] And adds persuasiveness to his lips. Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, Sweet and delightful to the soul and healing to the body.” (PROVERBS 16:23-24 AMP)

Did you know that what you speak has real consequences?
Words are not just useless things - when spoken, they actually sow seeds producing either life or death.
If you keep watering those seeds by continuing to speak in the same manner, they will bear fruit in due time, especially when the rich fertilizer of “faith” (believing without doubting) is mixed in.
That means that what you have been saying will eventually happen in your life.

“A man’s stomach will be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; He will be satisfied with the consequence of his words. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequences of their words.” (PROVERBS 18:20-21 AMP)

Now can you see how the body cycle of blessedness goes?
It begins when we allow God’s words of grace into our hearts through our eyes and ears.
Then out of the overflow of our hearts, our mouth speaks, sowing seeds of life.
In due time, the seeds produce fruits of blessings that we will see manifested in our lives!

If you truly understand the significance of this, then I believe you’ll be plugged in to God’s word on a daily basis, and meditating constantly on it.
When you have the habit of doing that, watch how you become a blessed man or woman that everyone envies.

They will see the fruits of blessings in your life and ask you “What is the secret to your happiness and success in life?”
That will be the best opportunity for you to glorify God -
How others see you living your life is the greatest sermon you can ever preach to them.

Milton, this was so good and so true. I myself daily listen to and or read and meditate on the word as much as possible. It's crucial to my life. God and his word are my daily sustenance. I don't think many Christians realize this until their lives may depend on it. Praise God, he's so good. Thank you for this blog. God bless you and your family.
