17 August 2014 - Pastor Brian Houston Sermon Notes - New Creation Church Sermon Notes - My Spirit, My ResponsibilityBrian Houston (born 17 February 1954 in Auckland, New Zealand) is a pastor in the Australian Christian Churches. He is currently the Senior Pastor at Hillsong Church which has locations in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne in Australia, London, Cape Town, Kiev, Germany, Paris, Moscow, Stockholm, New York City and Copenhagen. He was also the National President of Australian Christian Churches from 1997 to 2009. Proverbs 25:28 - People who have no rule over their own spirit are vulnerable to attacks from all directions. "He who has no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down and without walls. [Prov. 16:32.]" (Proverbs 25:28 AMP) Daniel 6:3 - Daniel had an excellent spirit, and that allowed him to receive promotions. "Then this Daniel was distinguished above the presidents and the satraps because an excellent spirit was in him, and the king thought to set him over the whole realm." (Daniel 6:3 AMP) Psalm 51:10-12 - If it's possible to have a right spirit, it must be also possible to have a wrong spirit. "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right, persevering, and steadfast spirit within me. Cast me not away from Your presence and take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit." (Psalm 51:10-12 AMP) Our spirit will shine through our gift. Make sure you keep the right spirit. 1) A right spirit and obedience Most people are too busy defending themselves to be teachable. Proverbs 1:5 - Wise people will be open to receiving sound counsel from other wise people. "The wise also will hear and increase in learning, and the person of understanding will acquire skill and attain to sound counsel [so that he may be able to steer his course rightly]–[Prov. 9:9.]" (Proverbs 1:5 AMP) Mark 10:22 - Who do you allow to look at you, love you and give you good advice? Imagine what God had in store for the rich young man if he had followed Jesus! "And Jesus, looking upon him, loved him, and He said to him, You lack one thing; go and sell all you have and give [the money] to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come [and] accompany Me [walking the same road that I walk]. At that saying the man's countenance fell and was gloomy, and he went away grieved and sorrowing, for he was holding great possessions." (Mark 10:21-22 AMP) Exodus 18:23-24 - Moses had the humility to heed the advice of Jethro (his father-in-law). Sometimes we need to hear what we don't want to hear, but we need to hear. "If you will do this, and God so commands you, you will be able to endure [the strain], and all these people also will go to their [tents] in peace. So Moses listened to and heeded the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he had said." (Exodus 18:23, 24 AMP) 2) A right spirit and position/promotion 2 Corinthians 10:12 - Trust God and be thankful for what we're blessed with. "Not that we [have the audacity to] venture to class or [even to] compare ourselves with some who exalt and furnish testimonials for themselves! However, when they measure themselves with themselves and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding and behave unwisely." (2 Corinthians 10:12 AMP) Your title doesn't give you spiritual authority. God's hand on your life does. This is an area you must trust God in. Don't underestimate what having the right spirit can lead you to in life. Don't take your esteem from things. 3) A right spirit and partnership Don't think that everyone is blessed because of you. God puts people together for Kingdom purposes and Kingdom causes. Acts 13:2 - Don't destroy your anointed partnerships because of small disputes. "While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, Separate now for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." (Acts 13:2 AMP) Don't treat too lightly the partnerships that God has put in your life. There is huge Kingdom opportunity in these partnerships. Who are these partners in your life? You cannot control or manipulate these partners. 2 Corinthians 6:14 - The next (spiritually) worse thing than an unbeliever is an unbelieving believer. "Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers [do not make mismated alliances with them or come under a different yoke with them, inconsistent with your faith]. For what partnership have right living and right standing with God with iniquity and lawlessness? Or how can light have fellowship with darkness?" (2 Corinthians 6:14 AMP) 4) A right spirit and failure It's one thing to make a mistake, but it's another thing to keep making the same mistake again and again. Do everything with the mindset that any mistakes that happen are your fault. Take responsibility for mistakes and your own life. Sometimes we win and sometimes we learn. We don't lose, God can turn our mistake into a blessing/victory. Our attitude towards failure is important. A failure can become a great opportunity for God to turn things around. Never loan anyone anything you cannot afford to lose. 5) A right spirit and success Money/ Success is not good or bad, but having Money/ Success will really show what's inside a person. Always remember that we must give all glory to God for our successes. Success should not change us. Don't be too moved by all the accolades and don't be affected by criticism. Always be humble and keep doing what God has called you to do. For some people, getting more success means becoming less generous. Give freely, don't practice controlled giving. Momentum can hide the cracks. Always remember that it's all glory to God and not about you. Stay authentic and keep the right people around you who love you enough to tell you what you need to hear, and not only what you want to hear. Keep a good spirit in success. God can bless you even more. 6) A right spirit and sabotage You cannot afford to allow people who have a poor spirit to sabotage you by their attitude. Psalm 101:3-4 - Stay away from wrong spirits that aim to cling to you. Some people's heart's are shifted the wrong way. Keep a free spirit. "I will set no base or wicked thing before my eyes. I hate the work of them who turn aside [from the right path]; it shall not grasp hold of me. A perverse heart shall depart from me; I will know no evil person or thing." (Psalm 101:3, 4 AMP) If you didn't hear it with your own ears, or see it with your own eyes, don't invent it with your small mind or speak it with your big mouth. 7) A right spirit and opposition Never develop a wounded spirit. Don't allow anyone to control your free spirit in a negative way. Let us trust the Spirit who lives in us, the Holy Spirit, our Teacher and Comforter, to teach us how to have a good spirit. Abba Father, in Jesus's name, I pray that whoever is reading this be blessed with an excellent spirit. Lord, as we behold Jesus, we are transformed from glory to glory, and all grace and favor shine upon us. Amen!
