A Kid Safe YouTube begins with Parental Guidance (Featuring Kids Songs that are Dangerous for Children)

A Kid Safe YouTube begins with Parental Guidance (Featuring Kids Songs that are Dangerous for Children)

In this blog post, I would like to discuss about the importance of parental guidance to ensure a kid-safe YouTube, as well as kids songs that seem innocent but are actually potentially-dangerous for your child.

My daughter Maeleth Sarah Goh is 22 months old now and my wife Amilee and I allow her to watch YouTube only during her meal at home or when we need her to be distracted for a short while when we are completing other tasks at hand.

As Mae's interest in watching kids shows online grows, we find that it's increasingly important to watch the shows with her so that she only watches age-appropriate content.

Just a few months back in October, I remember that in Singapore they were having a few Halloween-themed events where staff would dress up in scary costumes and people would pay to go for the haunted houses to be spooked.
I love going for such events because I like the thrill, but I certainly don't want Mae to be experiencing that at her current age - it would probably traumatize her and give her nightmares.
If your child has already been exposed to horror content and is freaked out, I recommending reading my blog post that can help with that: Eliminate the Fear of Watching Really Scary Horror Movies: Learn the Mental Trick That I’ll Teach my Daughter

Well what happened was, while Mae was watching her usual kids videos on YouTube, suddenly a sponsored advertisement appeared, and it was promoting one of those scary Halloween events.
Thank God I was sitting next to her watching the show with her - I quickly clicked "skip ad" and thankfully she wasn't exposed to anything scary. What a big relief.

However, that incident showed me how important parental guidance is to ensure a kid-safe YouTube. Sometimes an inappropriate ad can show up in the middle of a kids song, and you have to be prepared to click it away before your child faces potential lifelong mental scarring.

There are kids songs on YouTube that are actually dangerous for kids

Does it sound like a contradictory statement? Actually some innocent-seeming songs are far more dangerous than we think.

Take the song "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed" for instance. After Mae starting watching various versions of that song on YouTube, she also started jumping up and down wherever she was.
This behavior actually resulted in a few close-shaves where she almost fell off and injured herself.

You see, even though the intended message of the song is "No more jumping on the bed if not you will get injured", the visuals of the video show the little monkeys having so much fun while jumping on the bed.

If I tell you to "don't think of a fat pink elephant", what is the first thing you think of? That's right, a fat pink elephant.
Mae never had the idea to jump on the bed until she watched that video which told her not to do it.

I feel that this song is potentially-dangerous for kids and personally I don't allow Mae to listen to it anymore - I just click to play another video when she clicks a "jumping on the bed" song and tell her that it's because jumping on the bed is a behavior that is dangerous and should be avoided.

Another dangerous song is "客人來 (Ke Ren Lai)"

Credits go to @edward365, our friend on Instagram for bringing attention to this Mandarin kids song. I totally agree that the behavior encouraged by this song is ridiculously dangerous.

The song teaches kids that when a guest comes to look for your dad and your dad isn't home, let the guest in to sit on the couch and serve him or her tea.
What?? I don't want my daughter to let random strangers into the house, especially when no one is at home (that never happens, there's always someone at home with her).
Who knows who the guest could be - it could very well be someone with ill intentions.

I will not let Mae watch 客人來 (Ke Ren Lai) videos on YouTube anymore because of the wrong teachings in this song.

Murder and Violence encouraged in this "Finger Family" 'kids' video

There was a channel on YouTube called "Superkidz Finger Family" that posted a video of the extremely popular kids song "Finger Family" and in the video, it starts with innocent, non-violent Peppa Pig scenes and then suddenly shows Mickey and Minnie Mouse shooting each other with guns and firing at their own heads. Read more about this here.

Is this something we want our kids to see? I'm sure it isn't. Parental guidance is so important when we allow our children to watch kids videos on YouTube.
We never know when some psychopathic person was to brainwash the innocent children by flooding them with evil images in their minds.

Moral of the story is this: Watch the videos on YouTube with your kids. Don't let them surf around online unsupervised for you never know what the related videos will eventually bring your child to, or an age-inappropriate ad may suddenly pop up.

YouTube kids videos should not become a replacement babysitter for our kids. At the end of the day, I would want to encourage Mae to develop the love for reading physical books rather than have her only enjoy watching videos.
I do this by reading books to her, and I try to be dramatic and interesting when reading to her - to bring the story to life.

By reading books to her, she can develop important language and analytical skills, as well as focus and attention span that will be useful for her, and when she starts reading books herself, it will prepare her to love learning and studying subjects at school. I'm sure it has many long term benefits.

How else can we ensure a kid-safe YouTube? Do you have any experiences about watching shows online to warn about?
