New sermon notes: Pastor Joseph Prince taught us how to interpret the Scripture properly in light of Jesus’ finished work at the cross, as well as the primary way we get to see Jesus today!

Every soul is precious to Jesus.

Matthew 15:21-28 - The woman came to Jesus pretending to be a Jew by saying the term “Son of David”, but Jesus did not want to bless her in her pretense.
Even though she had no covenant with God, Jesus gave her a loophole by saying “It is not appropriate to take the children’s bread and throw it to the puppies (diminutive term).”
“Children’s bread” is healing.
Then the woman was honest and just called Jesus “Lord” and she received her daughter’s healing.
Jesus only commended two people for their great faith, and both of them were Gentiles. One was this woman, and the other was a Roman centurion.
They were not conscious of the Law (Ten Commandments), but they were only focused on Jesus.

“Jesus went out from there and withdrew into the region of Tyre and Sidon. Behold, a Canaanite woman came out from those borders and cried, saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord, you son of David! My daughter is severely possessed by a demon!” But he answered her not a word. His disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away; for she cries after us.” But he answered, “I wasn’t sent to anyone but the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But she came and worshiped him, saying, “Lord, help me.” But he answered, “It is not appropriate to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” But she said, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.” Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, great is your faith! Be it done to you even as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that hour.” (Matthew‬ ‭15:21-28‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

Deuteronomy 8:7-9 - The underground water is a picture of the refreshment, revelations, and blessings that come from going through valley seasons of trial.
Another way to see it is that they are the rich revelations received through deep study and meditation of God’s word.
In the land of Canaan, Israel had to look up and depend on God. They had to wait for the rain from Him.
God’s word comes in rich diversity of flavors.

“For Yahweh your God brings you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of springs, and underground water flowing into valleys and hills; a land of wheat, barley, vines, fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of olive trees and honey; a land in which you shall eat bread without scarcity, you shall not lack anything in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you may dig copper.” (Deuteronomy‬ ‭8:7-9‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

Jeremiah 15:16 - God’s word is primarily for eating.
When you feed on God’s word, it satisfies and nourishes you.
The things of the word cannot satisfy your soul. You will still feel empty after pursuing them.
The joy of the Lord that comes from God’s word is your strength. It gives you strength in body, soul, and spirit.

“Your words were found, and I ate them. Your words were to me a joy and the rejoicing of my heart, for I am called by your name, Yahweh, God of Armies.” (Jeremiah‬ ‭15:16‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

Every day people leak life naturally, but Jesus said we can life and have it more abundantly through Him.

Behold Jesus in the Scriptures and be transformed from glory to glory

Deuteronomy 34:1-3 - Moses did not look at Jericho first which was right in front and nearer, but instead he looked far off towards Dan.
Sometimes we study God’s word in a telescopic level and sometimes in a microscopic level.
When you read the Bible in a telescopic (panoramic) view, it washes you.

“Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is opposite Jericho. Yahweh showed him all the land of Gilead to Dan, and all Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah, to the Western Sea, and the south, and the Plain of the valley of Jericho the city of palm trees, to Zoar.” (Deuteronomy‬ ‭34:1-3‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

Luke 24:25-27 - To be foolish means that you don’t know. To be slow of heart to believe means that you know but you don’t believe.
It is more important to see Jesus in the Scriptures than in person because it gives everyone an equal opportunity today to see Jesus and to believe in His word.
When Jesus said “Moses”, He was referring to the first five books of the Scriptures.
When you read the Old Testament, focus on seeing Jesus in the types and shadows.

“He said to them, “Foolish people, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Didn’t the Christ have to suffer these things and to enter into his glory?” Beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.” (Luke‬ ‭24:25-27‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

Every word in the Scriptures is God-breathed. Even every letter.
When the religious leaders questioned Jesus about the resurrection from the dead, Jesus replied, “I AM the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob”. He answered based on one word “AM” and the religious leaders were silent because they believed that the words of Scripture are inspired.
When Paul wanted to show that the seed of Abraham is talking about Christ, he argued based on one letter to show that “seed” is a singular noun.

2 Timothy 3:14-17 - It is wise as a parent to read portions of the Scriptures to your child regularly. They can receive it in their spirit-man.
The word translated as “salvation” is all-encompassing and not just about being saved from Hell. It is salvation from kinds of troubles and lack.

“But you remain in the things which you have learned and have been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them. From infancy, you have known the holy Scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that each person who belongs to God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy‬ ‭3:14-17‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

2 Corinthians 3:13-18 - We are transformed by beholding Jesus in the Scriptures.
Moses wore a veil so that the people could not see the glory that was fading away. If the people saw the glory fading away, they would wonder if their leader had backslidden or done something wrong.
How do you see Moses’ face: through the reading of the Old Testament with an Old Old Covenant mindset.
How do you see Jesus’ face: through reading the Old and New Testaments and seeing Jesus in it.
The “mirror” is the Scriptures. God will unveil Jesus to you and transform you as you see Him.
Always turn to the Lord and pray for a hearing heart and seeing eyes before reading the Scriptures.

“and not as Moses, who put a veil on his face so that the children of Israel wouldn’t look steadfastly on the end of that which was passing away. But their minds were hardened, for until this very day at the reading of the old covenant the same veil remains, because in Christ it passes away. But to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart. But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face seeing the glory of the Lord as in a mirror, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord, the Spirit.” (2 Corinthians‬ ‭3:13-18‬ ‭WEBUS‬)

Deuteronomy 25:4 - When you read the Old Testament, do not just take the laws literally. See Gospel truths in them.

“You shall not muzzle the ox when he treads out the grain.” (Deuteronomy‬ ‭25:4‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

1 Corinthians 9:7-11 - Paul expounded the Old Testament verse for us.
Those who preach the Gospel should receive proper remuneration for their service.
When Paul interpreted the Old Testament, he did so with God’s love as a frame.

“What soldier ever serves at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard, and doesn’t eat of its fruit? Or who feeds a flock, and doesn’t drink from the flock’s milk? Do I speak these things according to the ways of men? Or doesn’t the law also say the same thing? For it is written in the law of Moses, “You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain.” Is it for the oxen that God cares, or does he say it assuredly for our sake? Yes, it was written for our sake, because he who plows ought to plow in hope, and he who threshes in hope should partake of his hope. If we sowed to you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we reap your fleshly things?” (1 Corinthians‬ ‭9:7-11‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

When you see Jesus in the Scriptures, you are feeding and are being transformed. When you see Him, you will also know what you have in Christ. If you have Jesus, you get everything that belongs to Him.

In Paul’s letters, he begins by sharing positional truths (indicatives) first before instructing believers with imperatives.
God will guide us what to do in every situation in a fluid, dynamic way. It is not always the same answer for every case.
It is not about following seven steps, but rather to know and believe that God loves you and is guiding you.

Psalm 136:1, 4-7, 13-15 - God overthrowing Pharaoh and the Egyptian army in the sea is loving kindness towards God’s people.
God was already very merciful to Pharaoh by giving him many chances to repent. Pharaoh hardened his own heart first before God hardened his heart.

“Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever…to him who alone does great wonders, for his loving kindness endures forever; to him who by understanding made the heavens, for his loving kindness endures forever; to him who spread out the earth above the waters, for his loving kindness endures forever; to him who made the great lights, for his loving kindness endures forever;…to him who divided the Red Sea apart, for his loving kindness endures forever; and made Israel to pass through the middle of it, for his loving kindness endures forever; but overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea, for his loving kindness endures forever;” (Psalms‬ ‭136:1, 4-7, 13-15‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

Today, hypocrisy is to act like you’re not already made the righteousness of God in Christ. God the Father put your sin onto Christ so that you could receive Jesus’ righteousness. We are now under Grace, not under Law.

Under Grace, you receive manifestations of Gospel truths that you see in the Scriptures.

2 Corinthians 3:6-9 - The letter (the Ten Commandments engraved on stone tablets) kills while the Spirit (under the New Covenant of Grace) gives life.

“who also made us sufficient as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. But if the service of death, written engraved on stones, came with glory, so that the children of Israel could not look steadfastly on the face of Moses for the glory of his face, which was passing away, won’t service of the Spirit be with much more glory? For if the service of condemnation has glory, the service of righteousness exceeds much more in glory.” (2 Corinthians‬ ‭3:6-9‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

God does not demand righteousness from you like under the Law. Under Grace, He supplies righteousness to you. God does not see you in sin, but in Christ’s righteousness.
