New Sermon Notes: Pastor Joseph Prince taught us the simple truth of what discipleship means, and how sonship is the way God wants Christians to live by under the New Covenant of Grace.

You cannot just wait for Sundays to get into God’s word. There is so much that God wants to teach you.

We are to be students of God’s grace.

Jesus said that plagues, rumors of wars, and wars will be on the increase. We are living in these times.

Bible study becomes fun when the Holy Spirit leads you in it. He gives you the rhema word and it is life to all your flesh.

The Scriptures say that God’s people perish because of the lack of knowledge. God’s word reveals the true nature of things to us, and gives us His wisdom and knowledge.

The word “disciple” is from the Greeks word “mathétés”, and in Hebrew it is “limud”. A disciple is nothing more than someone who is learning—a student. Disciples means a follower of a certain teacher (Rabbi).

A Christian cannot help but be hungry for God’s word. We are the righteousness of God in Christ.

When a butterfly falls among trash, it is still a butterfly. It does not turn back into a caterpillar. If you have been saved, you are still saved even if you have failed. You are a new creation in Christ.

There were disciples before there were Christians. Some people teach that to become a Christian is free because Jesus paid the cost, but to be a disciple there is a high cost. The flesh loves this, but actually it is regressing.

It is in the heart of every believer to learn. A baby does not have to be taught how to be hungry. A baby already hungers and cries out for milk.

A greater thing than disciple is a son of God, which is what we are.

Sonship only came after discipleship

Matthew 28:19 - The word “teach” is “mathéteuó” in Greek. The same root word for “disciples”.

“Go, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” (Matthew‬ ‭28:19‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Jesus said “go into the whole world” in the Gospel of Matthew because the Jews tend to think that the revelations of God are for themselves and not for the Gentiles.

In the Gospel of Luke which is directed at the Gentiles, it says “wait for the promise of the Father.” The Gospel had to first be preached in the guiltiest city (the one that crucified Jesus).

The disciples did not go into all the world until persecution happened and they were forced to scatter.

Acts 11:26 - The disciples were then called Christians. After the Book of Acts, the word disciple is no longer used.

“When he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they were gathered together with the assembly, and taught many people. The disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.” (Acts‬ ‭11:26‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Every Scripture is God-breathed. Some things in the Scriptures are only for our learning and not directly written to us.

2 Timothy 1:2 - In Paul’s epistles, the Christians are called sons and children, not disciples. Sonship is greater than discipleship. Familial relationship is greater than a student-teacher relationship.

“to Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.” (2 Timothy‬ ‭1:2‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

2 Timothy 2:1-2 - The Holy Spirit does not use “disciple” in any of the New Testament epistles. The passing down of teachings is done in a sonship manner. Sonship also encapsulates discipleship.
God looks for faithful men. The gift of teaching comes later.
Jesus to Paul, to Timothy, to faithful men, to others. There are five parties involved. Five is the number of Grace.

“You therefore, my child, be strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. The things which you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit the same to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.” (2 Timothy‬ ‭2:1-2‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Do not do things that you have no desire in for money. Follow the peace, joy, and desire in your spirit and the provision will follow in that area.

Christ means “Anointed one”. Christian comes from that. The anointing breaks the yoke. Oil smoothen the hinges and gets rid of creakiness.

Acts 11:26 - The word translated as “called” is the Greek word “chrématizó” which means divinely-called.

“and having found him, he brought him to Antioch, and it came to pass that they a whole year did assemble together in the assembly, and taught a great multitude, the disciples also were divinely called first in Antioch Christians.” (Acts‬ ‭11:26‬ ‭YLT98‬‬)

Evil spirits like dry places, not oily (anointed) or wet places.

Galatians 3:23-26 - The guardian spoken of here is the Ten Commandments. God married the children of Israel at Mount Sinai. On Mount Zion, God gave the Holy Spirit.
Now that sonship has come, we do not need the guardian anymore. The word son here is the Greek word “huios” which means full-grown son.

“But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, confined for the faith which should afterwards be revealed. So that the law has become our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. For you are all children of God, through faith in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians‬ ‭3:23-26‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Galatians 4:1-7 - The word “child” here is the Greek word “nepios” which means infant. An infant cannot partake of what he owns as an inheritance because he is not yet mature.
The Ten Commandments is the “elemental principles” which are the “ABCs”.
Strictly speaking, Jesus and His disciples in the four Gospels were still under the Law.
The disciples were not yet saved until after Jesus’ resurrection and He breathed on them, giving them the indwelling Holy Spirit. They were then baptized in the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost.
When praying, have a sense of how close you are to the Father. Do not make it seem like God is so distant and unapproachable. Enjoy that familial relationship.
We are heirs of God, not heirs-apparent. We can already enjoy our inheritance in Christ.

“But I say that so long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a bondservant, though he is Lord of all; but is under guardians and stewards until the day appointed by the father. So we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the elemental principles of the world. But when the fullness of the time came, God sent out his Son, born to a woman, born under the law, that he might redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of children. And because you are children, God sent out the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, “Abba, Father!” So you are no longer a bondservant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.” (Galatians‬ ‭4:1-7‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Jesus did not die for angels. He only died for man. He loves us and we are precious to Him.

In Jesus’ Parable of the Prodigal Son, the prodigal son was not even able to deliver his rehearsed speech. The father ran to him, hugged and kissed him, and restored all the benefits of sonship to him. We are sons, not hired servants.

Under the Law, God said take off your sandals for the place where you stand is holy. Under Grace, the Father says put sandals on his son’s feet.

There should be music and dancing in the Father’s house. Self-righteous ones cannot accept this.

The Father in the parable called the older son a “teknon” (a child), even though he was already a huios (full-grown son). The older son was not operating in a spirit of sonship, but in a spirit of slavery. He was self-righteous and depending on his own performance instead of his position as a son.

Luke 15:1-4 - The context of the three parables of grace in Luke 15 is that the religious leaders were murmuring that Jesus was receiving sinners to Himself. Jesus loves it when sinners come to Him.

“Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming close to him to hear him. The Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, “This man welcomes sinners, and eats with them.” He told them this parable. “Which of you men, if you had one hundred sheep, and lost one of them, wouldn’t leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one that was lost, until he found it?” (Luke‬ ‭15:1-4‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Luke 14:25-27 - These multitudes only saw Jesus as a teacher, not as a Savior, so He wanted to thin the crowd.
After the multitudes left, then the sinners came near to Him at the beginning of Luke 15.
Being a Christian is not about just taking Jesus’ teachings, but to be born again.

“Now great multitudes were going with him. He turned and said to them, “If anyone comes to me, and doesn’t disregard his own father, mother, wife, children, brothers, and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he can’t be my disciple. Whoever doesn’t bear his own cross, and come after me, can’t be my disciple.” (Luke‬ ‭14:25-27‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

John 6:65-69 - No one can come to Jesus without the Father drawing us to Him. The disciples who left Jesus were ones who thought they were very smart for choosing to follow Him. They were proud about their own smartness.
These disciples who left could not take grace.
Jesus is so cool. He is not hard-up for followers. He is looking for those with the right heart.

“He said, “For this cause I have said to you that no one can come to me, unless it is given to him by my Father.” At this, many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Jesus said therefore to the twelve, “You don’t also want to go away, do you?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”” (John‬ ‭6:65-69‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Matthew‬ ‭26:21-25‬ ‭- On the night where Jesus was betrayed, the disciples each called Jesus “Lord” except for Judas who said “Rabbi”. It shows that Judas never saw Jesus as Lord, and he was never saved.

“As they were eating, he said, “Most certainly I tell you that one of you will betray me.” They were exceedingly sorrowful, and each began to ask him, “It isn’t me, is it, Lord?” He answered, “He who dipped his hand with me in the dish, the same will betray me. The Son of Man goes, even as it is written of him, but woe to that man through whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for that man if he had not been born.” Judas, who betrayed him, answered, “It isn’t me, is it, Rabbi?” He said to him, “You said it.” (Matthew‬ ‭26:21-25‬ ‭WEB‬‬)
