Being Bullied? Here’s How to Overcome It

Being Bullied? Here’s How to Overcome It

I was a victim of bullying in school. I admittedly had character flaws, and I struggled trying to fit in, to belong and be significant — stemming from my insecurities. At that time, I wasn’t a Christian yet.

Evil rumors had spread about me, saying that I was smoking, taking drugs, committing sexual immorality, etc. I was shocked to hear them — they were so absurd.
When I entered a room, I could sense that everyone stopped talking like they were just talking bad about me. It was a dark time and I felt so alone.

Even today, I still get bullied, receiving hate mail from some self-righteous, unhappy people after they read my blog who want to strong-arm me into stopping what I’m doing.
Why would I stop? It’s my calling and ministry that the Holy Spirit is leading me in.
Without Him, none of this would be possible. He has given so much Grace and wisdom that it’s astounding.

Bullying is a real problem and it’s demonic.
When another person or group of people think that you are weaker and behave wickedly against you with evil intentions to harm you, that’s bullying.

Today I’m no longer affected by the bullies because I have grown in Christ. If you are facing bullying at home, at work, among your peers, at school, or even at church (God forbid), I want to encourage you and give you some practical keys to overcome the bullies.

God’s word teaches us not to seek to avenge ourselves, but to give place to God to avenge us. He is our Avenger and Defender. When we don’t try to fix a problem by ourselves, He steps in to help us with it. God said “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay.” You can be assured that God is a God of justice and He’s on your side.

1. Don’t seek revenge.

“They will all pay, just they wait and see what I’ll do to them.” Don’t think such thoughts.

“Repay no one evil for evil. Respect what is honorable in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men. Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, “Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.” Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in doing so, you will heap coals of fire on his head.” Don’t be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (Romans 12:17-21 WEB)

As long as you don’t try to go vigilante on your enemies, He will ensure that they face the consequences for their actions.
Whoever touches you has just touched the apple of God’s eye, and He fiercely guards you as His most prized treasure.

God’s word also teaches us not to gloat when our enemies face their consequences, if not God will restrain His hand and they will stop getting their just desserts.

Want to go one step further as a doer of God’s word? The Bible tells us to pray for our enemies — to bless them and not to curse them.
Bless those who harmed you. God will surely reward you abundantly for your faith.
Remember: you’re not doing it for their sake. You’re forgiving them for your own sake and for the Lord.
Unforgiveness is a bitter toxin and it is also the devil’s trap.
Keeping it in your heart is poisoning your body, soul and life.

Cast your burden to the Lord, and forgive your enemies just as the God has abundantly forgiven you through Jesus’ finished work.
Nothing the bullies do or say to you can ever outweigh the sin debt that Jesus paid in your place.

Since you have received such a great and overwhelming gift of forgiveness, the only right response of thankfulness is to freely and abundantly forgive others.
Like Jesus said, forgive someone who has done wrong to you up to seventy times seven times — as much as needed.
If they harm you, turn the other cheek. Don’t strike back.

2. Overcome evil with good.

The Apostle Paul taught us to overcome evil with good.
The Bible says what merit to us is it if we are only good to those who are good to us? Doesn’t the world also practice that?
We can imitate our Heavenly Father who is kind to both the righteous and the wicked.
He gives good gifts even to those who slander His name. He is patient and long-suffering despite their ungratefulness.
The devil’s trick is that he wants to pull us down to our enemy’s level. He wants us to fight evil with evil, but once we do that, he’s got us right where he wants us — in the domain of darkness and sin.

If you are wise, you will be even nicer to those who are evil to you.
When the devil sees you doing more good when evil increases against you, he will think twice about sending people to persecute you.
Firstly because you’re showing those bullies a living testimony of the power and love of God.
Secondly because you’re turning your enemies into friends.
The devil will leave you alone when he sees that attacking you is counterproductive to himself.

The Bible says that when you overcome evil with good, you’re like heaping hot coals (of guilt) upon your enemies’ heads.
Most importantly, it also says that God will reward you.
It doesn’t qualify what type of rewards so feel free to receive both earthly restorations and eternal rewards!

3. Your value and identity is in Jesus Christ

Like I shared at the beginning of this devotional, as an unbeliever I was extremely insecure.
I sought other’s valuation of my own worth and value. That was a pitfall.

As a believer, your identity is in Christ. The opinions of your bullies don’t matter. Only what God says about you is important.
Those bullies couldn’t care less about you, but God loves you with an everlasting love.

Jesus said that God’s word is truth and that His sheep hear His voice. You can choose to believe the truth which is what God says about you instead of the vicious lies that the bullies say about you.

God calls you righteous, holy, loved, blessed, favored, an heir, glorified, honored, and His child, accepted in the Beloved Jesus.
You are all of the above because of Jesus’ finished work at the cross!
The cross changed everything for us and that’s why we worship and praise Jesus forever.

God will honor your faith when you choose to believe Him instead of the world. He will go to work in you and deliver you from all your troubles.

“For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he could swear by no one greater, he swore by himself, saying, “Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.” Thus, having patiently endured, he obtained the promise. For men indeed swear by a greater one, and in every dispute of theirs the oath is final for confirmation. In this way God, being determined to show more abundantly to the heirs of the promise the immutability of his counsel, interposed with an oath; that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we may have a strong encouragement, who have fled for refuge to take hold of the hope set before us. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and entering into that which is within the veil;” (Hebrews 6:13-19 WEB)

I can’t emphasize enough the importance of being rooted in your identity in Christ — you are an heir of the promise. God has promised to bless and multiply you like He did for Abraham!
It is an anchor for your soul (mind, will and emotions), especially amidst the raging storm of persecution and bullying.

It is like holding up the shield of faith that quenches all the fiery darts thrown at you by the people who are instigated by the devil.
The pure water of God’s word extinguishes every flaming lie that the bullies shoot your way.

4. Focus your attention to the people around you who matter.

When Jesus was on His journey to the cross, He was bullied — spat on, slapped, humiliated, His beard was pulled, a crown of thorns was jammed into His head.
Jesus knows what you’re going through. He has endured worse things than you.

Yet He didn’t answer His persecutors who had already condemned Him in their hearts. Jesus only spoke to and sought affirmation from His Heavenly Father at the cross — He knew Whose opinion mattered the most.
Not the chief priests, not the scribes, not the Pharisees, not Pilate, not the soldiers, not the multitudes — only His Father in heaven.

Jesus did answer those who were open-hearted and keen to know His true identity.
It’s only human to focus on the bullying and forget about all the people that still support and love you in your life.
They are the ones you should be giving your attention and focus, not the bullies.
When was the last time you showed and expressed appreciation and love towards those who care about you?
Even in your trial, you can still count your blessings. Don’t take what and who you already have for granted.

5. Begin to praise and thank God now.

You may feel like the cords of death have wrapped around your neck and that death lies at the door.
The negativity spewing towards you may be suffocating and unbearable.

Yet no one can steal your joy if you don’t allow it. The Bible says that the joy of the Lord is our strength.
It also says that out of the lips of babies God has established strength.

“From the lips of babes and infants you have established strength, because of your adversaries, that you might silence the enemy and the avenger.” (Psalms 8:2 WEB)

Jesus actually quoted this verse. But He replaced the word strength with praise.

“and said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” Jesus said to them, “Yes. Did you never read, ‘Out of the mouth of babes and nursing babies you have perfected praise?’”” (Matthew 21:16 WEB)

Did He misquote God’s word? No, don’t forget that He is the original Author of the Scriptures.
He was defining strength as praise. When you praise, you become strong because you become strengthened by God.

Dear brethren, praise gives you strength in the Lord.
If you feel completely weak right now, you can begin to praise the Lord and receive an impartation of His strength — His strength is made perfect in your weakness.

Put on your favorite praise and worship song and just sing your heart out to Him.
As your eyes shift away from the bullying and onto Jesus’ beautiful face, God will go to work and break every demonic power that is behind the bullying and persecution.

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil. My cup runs over.” (Psalms 23:4-5 WEB)

Like Psalm 23 says, God prepares a table for you in the presence of your enemies. While the bullies are still there being mean to you, and you are still in the valley of the shadow of death, you can still praise and worship God for He is good all the time.

You can still rejoice that you have Jesus and that you are saved, and a completely righteous child of God.
There’s much to be thankful for if you just open your eyes to see them.

Just like that, as you are lost in the majesty and glory of Jesus’ face, your enemies will be defeated and scattered. That’s how God is going to lead you through and out of the valley.

Maybe you feel like you’re helplessly up against a powerful army of bullies. That’s what King Jehoshaphat felt too.
However, he responded by trusting in the Lord. He sent a praise and worship team to praise the Lord in the presence of all his enemies, and the Lord wrought a miraculous victory for the king.

“When he had taken counsel with the people, he appointed those who were to sing to Yahweh, and give praise in holy array, as they go out before the army, and say, “Give thanks to Yahweh; for his loving kindness endures forever.” When they began to sing and to praise, Yahweh set ambushers against the children of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were struck. For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to utterly kill and destroy them: and when they had finished the inhabitants of Seir, everyone helped to destroy another. When Judah came to the place overlooking the wilderness, they looked at the multitude; and behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and there were none who escaped. When Jehoshaphat and his people came to take their plunder, they found among them in abundance both riches and dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away. They took plunder for three days, it was so much. On the fourth day, they assembled themselves in Beracah Valley, for there they blessed Yahweh. Therefore the name of that place was called “Beracah Valley” to this day. Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, with Jehoshaphat in front of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for Yahweh had made them to rejoice over their enemies.” (2 Chronicles 20:21-27 WEB)

Your answer is not to become stronger in the flesh so that you can fight the bullies off.
The solution is to praise God and see how big He is and how tiny the bullies are in comparison.
If God is for you, who or what can ever be against you?

Your heritage in the Lord is that every weapon formed against you will never prosper and every tongue that rises against you will be condemned.

“No weapon that is formed against you will prevail; and you will condemn every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of Yahweh’s servants, and their righteousness is of me,” says Yahweh.” (Isaiah 54:17 WEB)

If you apply these five keys that I’ve shared and be doers of the word of God, I believe that you, like King Jehoshaphat, will walk out of the bullying victorious and with truckloads of spoils!

Are you being bullied now? Share your story (it helps to talk about it and not bottle your feelings up) and prayer requests in the comments below. I will gladly pray with you and confess victory over you.

I was conflicted between making this message a video or a blog post, and I still settled on writing.
I know very clearly that the Lord has anointed my writing but my preaching I’m not so sure.

I write books, devotionals (more than 300 already), sermons and sermon notes on a freelance basis, all thanks to our patrons on Patreon who help to make it possible.

It’s not fully at the level whereby I am making enough to write full time for the Lord and be able to support my family.

We used to earn a comfortable passive income from doing business, whereby some months our combined income was over US$20,000, but ever since I became a full-time dad and was led to write daily for the Lord, our income has plummeted.
The devil has been really bullying us — killing, stealing and destroying — but I thank Jesus for His restoration, promotion and blessings that’s coming our way!

If you feel led, please partner with my ministry on Patreon and receive valuable rewards of goodwill as our token of appreciation.

I am running a special offer for this new month of March for $20 and above patrons.
I have started a Whatsapp Chat group called "God Every Morning Bible Study" whereby I share my daily takeaways from Bible Study.

Sandcastles Don't Last Forever

$7.99

This is the eBook version.

If you prefer to get the Paperback version (physical copy), you can get it on Amazon here for US$15.

About the Book:

One day when I was singing praises to God, an image floated up in my spirit: a big and beautiful sandcastle being washed away by the waves from the sea. God was teaching me the futility of holding tightly onto worldly possessions because like the sandcastle, they won't last, and one day will cease to exist.

He taught me from His word to focus on Him and by doing so, I would reap great eternal rewards before Jesus' throne at the start of the Millennium. These rewards will last forever and can't be destroyed or stolen.

It is my prayer that the revelations in this book will help you to live with a focus on the things above where God is, fulfill your God-given calling in life, be happier and to accumulate more eternal rewards to your account.

In this Book, you will learn about:

- Heavenly investment advice and the futility of worldly pursuits from a trillionaire in the Bible

- Why God has to reward us in order to be righteous

- When and how God will destroy the current earth and sky to make way for new ones

- The types of fireproof works that earn eternal rewards at the end of time

- The abundant rewards of doing good works while abiding by the non-disclosure agreement between God and you

- The difference between the temporary places of torment: Sheol and Abaddon

- Who is the Antichrist and his name revealed in the Bible

- What is the Mark of the Beast and why it disqualifies its recipients from receiving salvation

- The different judgments at the throne of Jesus Christ and what it means for you as a believer

- How to fulfill your calling and maximize your gifts to receive the best eternal rewards

Testimonials about the contents of this book:

"Sandcastles Don't Last Forever is very well written, its message loud and clear. Milton Goh gives common-sense insight on often confusing Scripture, which is much appreciated in these troubled times. My understanding of the Bible has definitely improved."

- Mike Garrett, first Editor/ Publisher for Stephen King and Author of Christian Novel "Innocence Denied", from USA

"This book is absolutely breathtaking. We don't work to be saved but were created to do good works. I am so energized and excited to know God values our works and we will be rewarded. This is all Glory to Jesus... I cant wait to throw my crowns at his feet and thank him for saving my life!" - Evangelist Michael Clark from USA

"Dear Milton Goh, I truly thank our Abba, Father for the revelations in this book. It is so amazing how I begin to discover important verses in the Bible that I have never read. That instead of following riches, with sleepless nights, and actually shortening our lives, we are just to 'Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ', and 'Love one another'. How beautiful to find out that actually in the Bible there is both 'Earthly or Worldly Investment Wisdom' and 'Eternal Investment Wisdom' according to the revelations here from Ecclesiastes 5:14-17 WEB)!; “It seems like Solomon was not only wise at earning material riches but also at earning eternal riches.” All the glory to our Lord Jesus Christ! God bless you Milton Goh for such a wonderful book!" - Nitta Nierra from Belgium

“Thank you Milton. I have just finished reading “Sandcastles Don’t Last Forever”. It’s such a good book that's filled with God's word. I love it very much. Might read again if I have the time. Thanks so much!” - Mally Chai from Singapore

I give glory to the Lord Jesus for my dear brother Milton for this exceptional resource. I'm gonna keep feeding on its contents and believe God for supernatural breakthroughs as my mind is renewed in Christ!" - Terence from Tombel, Cameroon

"Hi Milton, just finished reading your book. Truly awe-inspiring! The Holy Spirit is all over this. Testimonial about Milton's sermon notes:

"Milton Goh my brother, your insight on Grace has set me free from 20 yrs of addiction. I was a 7 time felon but by the GRACE of God I am now an ordained minister. Here is some of my story: I was saved in Dec 2016 and started evangelizing in July of 2017 as soon as I was released. My ministry has led over 800 to Jesus. I go to jails, rehabs, homeless shelters plus numerous churches! Your notes and sermons allowed me to find rest in Jesus. I was getting tired trying to perform what I thought God needed from me. You have made me realize it's 100% the CROSS and now I go constantly for Jesus but never get tired. Thanks for your wisdom and love for Jesus. May God bless you and your family!"

* Please Take Note: These sermon notes are not official New Creation Church (NCC) or Pastor Joseph Prince sermon notes. These sermon notes are not affiliated with NCC or Pastor Prince.
I highly recommend purchasing Pastor Prince's sermons on his mobile app "Joseph Prince" on Apple App Store or Google Play Store even after you read these notes as I may have missed out something he shared and the overall experience is definitely different when you listen to him preaching directly!
Use these notes as a revision guide instead of solely depending on them!

These sermon notes are independently-compiled by me, and I'm just a loyal and regular attendee of the the church's Sunday services, and I feel led to take detailed personal sermon notes of Pastor Prince's anointed messages to share them with the world, which desperately needs the true word of God and the original gospel of grace.

I feel blessed to be able to attend Pastor Joseph Prince's services in person, and would like to help everyone who isn't able to attend in person, to get hold of the messages as soon as it is preached!
