23 October 2016 - Seeing The Divine Servant in the Gospel of Mark - Pastor Joseph Prince Sermon Notes Online - New Creation Church Sermon Notes OnlineEvery time you come to God's house, you don't go out the same. You are being transformed from glory to glory. Grace and peace is multiplied to us in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus. Grace is unmerited favor. Psalm 91:3 - A "fowler" is a trapper. The devil lays traps for us, but God will surely deliver us from them. “Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from the perilous pestilence.” (Psalms 91:3 NKJV) I Corinthians 15:58 - Sometimes people serving in full time ministry are serving their image, or serving their own ego. It doesn't mean that someone in full time ministry is definitely serving the Lord Jesus. Serving the Lord doesn't just mean shepherding a group or preaching the word. Serve the Lord in your own capacity that God has blessed you with. The word "steadfast" here means that we must be seated and settled in our righteousness and know that we are blessed, favored and loved before we can serve the Lord. That's why the Christian life begins with us being seated with Christ. The word "immovable" here means that Jesus has already redeemed us from sweat and stress. In the Garden of Eden, Adam was cursed to eat bread from the sweat of his face (from toil and labor). In the Garden of Gethsemane when Jesus sweat blood, that's when He redeemed us from sweat. We can work but we don't have to be stressed. The word "abounding" here means serving the Lord more than just the bare minimum, on a daily basis, not just on Sundays. “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” (I Corinthians 15:58 NKJV)
John 12:26 - The word "honor" here means that the Father will value you very highly. If you serve Jesus, the Father will honor you.
“If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.” (John 12:26 NKJV) When we start looking at each other we get hurt, disillusioned, disappointed. Our eyes must be on Jesus. All of us have clay feet. The only perfect Servant is Jesus Christ. The Gospel of Mark is the face of an Ox - an ox is strong to labor - the Gospel of the Servant. Every leader must have the four faces: Lion (the King), Ox (the Servant), Man( the Man), and the Eagle (Man of God). If you lose one face at least you have three more (haha!). Mark 1:1 - There is no genealogy mentioned in the book of Mark because you don't ask a servant for his pedigree. A Son doesn't have to do the same things that a servant does, but the Son became the Servant. There is majesty and there is meekness in the Lord Jesus. “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” (Mark 1:1 NKJV) When the disciples were giving excuses why they shouldn't be the one to wash the other disciples' feet, Jesus took off His outer garment, put on a slave's girdle, and washed their feet. Only people who know who they are in God can stoop down and serve. Proud people cannot serve. Married couples must not have to many separations, if not, they might as well not get married. There shouldn't be too much of "this is my..." and "that is your ...". You must not keep score cards - example: I already apologized last time, now is his turn. The worst thing you can do is to give food to the prodigal son in the pig pen. Don't do good just to feel good for yourself. Do good like how God will - at the right time, at the right place. II Timothy 4:11 - God restored John Mark even though he failed big time at Pamphylia. He chose the failed servant to write about the Perfect Servant who never fails! “Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for ministry.” (II Timothy 4:11 NKJV) The Gospel of Mark is the shortest gospel of the four, and is in chronological order. This word appears many times in the Gospel of Mark: The Greek word "Eutheos" which means immediately, straight away. Examples: Mark 1:10,12,18,21,28,29,30,31,42,43. “And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove... Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness.... They immediately left their nets and followed Him.... Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught.... And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.... Now as soon as they had come out of the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.... But Simon’s wife’s mother lay sick with a fever, and they told Him about her at once..... So He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and immediately the fever left her. And she served them..... As soon as He had spoken, immediately the leprosy left him, and he was cleansed..... And He strictly warned him and sent him away at once,” (Mark 1:10, 12, 18, 21, 28-31, 42-43 NKJV) The Gospel of Mark: 35 of the 45 verses in Mark Chapter 1 begins a sentence with "And". Out of the 16 chapters, 11 chapters open with the word "And". 1200 times, "And" is used to open a chapter or open a sentence in the Gospel of Mark. Mark 1:2-4 - 1) Announced by the forerunner. The forerunner is John the Baptist. The prophecy in verse 2 is from Malachi. The prophecy in verse 3 is from Isaiah. John is the voice, not the echo. The voice comes first. “As it is written in the Prophets: “Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You.” “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the LORD; Make His paths straight.’ ” John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.” (Mark 1:2-4 NKJV) Philippians 2:5-8 - Jesus came in the form of a bondservant. “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.” (Philippians 2:5-8 NKJV) Jesus is still serving and He keeps on serving. Isaiah 40:3 - The word "Lord" is Yahweh and the word "God" is Elohim. “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the LORD; Make straight in the desert A highway for our God.” (Isaiah 40:3 NKJV) Mark 1:10-11 - At this point in time, Jesus had not even performed one miracle yet. 2) Affirmed by the Father - The Father affirmed His love for Jesus to encourage Him. We all go in the knowledge that God loves us. 3) Anointed by the Spirit. You want your children to perform? Approve them. Stop the curse of approving your child only when they do well. Approve them first. If you don't praise or affirm your child, they will become proud. “And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove. Then a voice came from heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”” (Mark 1:10-11 NKJV) Luke 2:51-52 - You want to be increased in wisdom, stature and favor with God and man? Learn to submit. Submitting to someone smarter, stronger and more powerful than you is not called submission - it's called giving in. “Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.” (Luke 2:51-52 NKJV) In the Gospel of Mark, there are three times more miracles mentioned than in the Gospel of Matthew. When it comes to serving, what you do is more important than what you say. Mark 10:45 - We must consent to be served first by God until we are so full that we can go out to serve the Lord. “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”” (Mark 10:45 NKJV) There are 12 accounts of Jesus casting out demons in these short 16 chapters of the Gospel of Mark. Although only a Servant, Jesus has dominion both in the visible world and in the invisible world. It's like the Holy Spirit is saying that "You want power? Then serve." Jesus wants us to be great, but He doesn't want us to be great by promoting ourselves or by doing it the world's way. Why is John the Baptist the greatest up till Jesus' time on earth? It is because his ministry points to the Lord Jesus Christ - "Behold the Lamb of God Who takes away the sins of the world". Does the ministry you listen to or sit under point to the Lord Jesus? Mark 1:12-13 - 4) Assailed by the devil - It was the Holy Spirit, and not Satan, who led Jesus into the wilderness. The word "tempted" here can mean tempted to sin, or tested. Jesus cannot be tempted to sin because He does not have the sin nature inside Him. There is no stirring inside when He is tempted. For Jesus, He was tested, to show that He is perfect. It's almost like God the Father is saying to Satan, "Here, this is pure gold. Go ahead, test Him in every way." In the end, the devil has to acknowledge that Jesus is pure gold. It's amazing that so many things can be said in one verse - Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the angels, Satan, and the wild beasts were there. 5) Acknowledged by the wild beasts - These animals are not domesticated. Even the wild beasts acknowledged Jesus as God, only man doesn't. The wounds on Jesus at the cross were not made by the wild beasts. They were made by man. The only man-made things in heaven are the wounds in Jesus' hands and feet. 6) Attended to by angels - Every time we proclaim the name of Jesus and gather in the name of Jesus, angels are there to minister to us because we are valuable to God. Angels are still serving today, and every child has an angel assigned to him/her. “Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness. And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him.” (Mark 1:12-13 NKJV) Mark 1:23-24 - Even demons recognize and know who Jesus is. Demons know who are serving Jesus and who are not. “Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”” (Mark 1:23-24 NKJV) Mark 1:32-34 - 7) Acclaimed by the multitude. Jesus does not need the promotion of demons. It's only blinded men that do not recognize who Jesus is. It is no wonder that they don't have wealth, health, healing etc. Mark 1 ends with sunset - Jesus came into our darkness. “At evening, when the sun had set, they brought to Him all who were sick and those who were demon-possessed. And the whole city was gathered together at the door. Then He healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He did not allow the demons to speak, because they knew Him.” (Mark 1:32-34 NKJV) Mark 16:2 - The Gospel of Mark ends with sunrise. Jesus brings us out of the darkness, into the light. “Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.” (Mark 16:2 NKJV) Mark 16:19-20 - Even though Jesus is exalted in glory, He is still working. When we minister in the name of Jesus, Jesus is working with us. We are not alone. “So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.” (Mark 16:19-20 NKJV) In the vision of the Apostle John in the Book of Revelation, Jesus is seen girded with gold. Even though Jesus is high and lifted up, He is still serving. This message is for those who are steadfast, immovable, abounding and who want to serve the Lord. Very good work. I have nearly every sermon CD of Jospeh Prince for the last 6 years, but sermon notes are lacking. I would be interested in obtaining more of your sermon notes. In fact, as I am preparing to preach tomorrow, I tried to find which CD he mentioned about John the Baptist being beheaded, the disciples told Him, He went into desert place alone. It was very recently telecast (around May 4). I was most interested in Pastor Prince's description of how Jesus and John the Baptist were close coming up and how the death had to affect even Jesus.
