5 Life Lessons and Moral Value in "13 Reasons Why" on Netflix (Based on the Novel by Jay Asher)

1) If you have someone you love, tell them. Don't wait until it's too late and live to regret it.

Hannah Baker and Clay Jensen loved each other but were not straightforward and open with how they felt about each other.

Only after Hannah slit her own wrists, bleeding to death, and the tapes started being passed around did Clay realize that he should have told her how he truly felt.

2) People can be really selfish and mean, and it usually takes a tragedy before they learn from their mistakes.

The students on the tapes all did Hannah Baker wrong, and at the time of doing it, they thought nothing about it.

Only after their wrongdoings were exposed on the tapes did they begin to seriously consider the severity of their actions.

3) Being a people-pleaser and trying to get approval from others is a sure recipe for disappointment.
Don't let other people's opinions determine your value.

Hannah Baker's incident with Justin Foley at the playground caused everyone's first impression of her to be ruined.

With her reputation at school in the dumps, she desperately kept trying to win approval from people whom she thought were her friends, but kept getting hurt and betrayed.

This process repeatedly sank her deeper into misery, isolation and depression.

4) Sometimes we say and do things without considering or realizing that our loved ones are watching

Hannah Baker's parents were arguing over financial problems when Hannah was standing right there.

They treated her as though she wasn't important, like she was invisible.

Especially if you are a parent, you must realize that what you say and do affects and influences your children.

5) Secrets can't stay buried forever. It's better to tell the truth from the beginning, than to be ambushed by it at the wrong time.

Justin Foley tried to hide the truth from Jessica Davis about Bryce Walker raping her. It was exposed on the tapes.

Courtney Crimsen initiated kissing Hannah Baker and when the photo of them kissing that Tyler Down took was sent to everyone, she made Hannah take the fall alone. It was exposed on the tapes.

Sheri Holland tried to hide the fact that she knocked down the Stop sign that lead to the car accident that caused Jeff's death. It was exposed on the tapes.

The list goes on... no secret remains hidden. Only the truth endures.
