There is a place in Israel called Bethel. Bethel means “House of God”. The first mention of Bethel is when Jacob was there. When God gave Abraham the promise of a child, there was also evidence contrary to the promise. Abraham and Sarah were both barren. Genesis 25:20-21 - Isaac is Abraham’s direct descendant. Abraham and Sarah were once barren. Now Rebekah was also barren. When Isaac saw evidence contrary to the promise again (he knew about his parents' struggle in conceiving him) in his life, he pleaded to God - he stood on the promise of God. The Bible says that all the promises of God in Christ are Yes and Amen. Keep on pressing in and don’t give up. “Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah as wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padan Aram, the sister of Laban the Syrian. Now Isaac pleaded with the LORD for his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD granted his plea, and Rebekah his wife conceived.” (Genesis 25:20-21 NKJV) Genesis 25:24-26 - God gave the once-barren Rebekah twins. When God answers your prayer, He oversupplies. He gives you above all that you can think or imagine. Esau means hairy. Jacob means supplanter (because he grabbed his brother’s heel). Isaac waited 20 years for God’s promise to come to pass. He was probably discouraged, but he held on and believed God. “So when her days were fulfilled for her to give birth, indeed there were twins in her womb. And the first came out red. He was like a hairy garment all over; so they called his name Esau. Afterward his brother came out, and his hand took hold of Esau’s heel; so his name was called Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.” (Genesis 25:24-26 NKJV) You are as young as you think you are in Christ. Start leaning in and taking hold of the promises of God. Don’t go by the natural and what you see. Believe what’s in God’s word. There was a problem. Isaac loved Esau because Esau was good at hunting game. Whereas Rebekah loved Jacob more. Rebekah came up with a scheme to trick her own husband to give Jacob the firstborn blessing instead of to Esau. Esau vowed to kill Jacob for stealing the firstborn blessing, after Isaac his father dies. Rebekah overheard Esau saying this and secretly told Jacob to run away and return only when Esau’s anger had subsided. That is how Jacob arrives at Bethel. |
