How to Begin Praying in Tongues According to the Bible

How to Begin Praying in Tongues According to the Bible

“But you, beloved, keep building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit.” ‭‭(Jude‬ ‭1:20‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

There’s faith, and then there’s a “most holy faith”.

Holy means to be set apart.

When we pray in the Holy Spirit, also known as praying in tongues, we are using a “most holy faith”.

It is a faith that is uncorrupted by worldly beliefs, unhindered by our mind’s tendency to produce unbelief in our hearts and un-limited by our understanding of Scriptures and God’s heart for us.

Praying in tongues is truly a gift that sets us apart unto God’s will—Jesus Himself praying for us through His Spirit living inside us, offering up praise and prayers that are perfectly aligned with God the Father’s will.

“In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered. He who searches the hearts knows what is on the Spirit’s mind, because he makes intercession for the saints according to God.” ‭‭(Romans‬ ‭8:26-27‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

It’s the gift that allows the holy Trinity to work in tandem, having free rein over your life—destroying whatever obstacles are in your way, orchestrating blessings in your path, building you up in all ways (body, soul and spirit) and even praying for others who need urgent help.

“So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. See how a small fire can spread to a large forest! And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna.” ‭‭(James‬ ‭3:5-6‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

As ignorant unbelievers, we once used the power in our tongues to speak death and destroy what is good in our lives, sabotaging our destinies.

“Tongues like fire appeared and were distributed to them, and one sat on each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability to speak.” ‭‭(Acts‬ ‭2:3-4‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

On the Day of Pentecost when Jesus poured out the Holy Spirit upon the church, the Holy Spirit manifested Himself as tongues of fire to show the nature of the gift of praying in tongues.

Through the gift of praying in tongues, God catches hold of our tongues and uses its power to burn away what is evil and set up what is good and life-giving in our lives.

Praying in tongues is unlimited, unhindered, perfect praise and prayer to God!

“with all prayer and requests, praying at all times in the Spirit, and being watchful to this end in all perseverance and requests for all the saints:” ‭‭(Ephesians‬ ‭6:18‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

No wonder praying in the Holy Spirit is an offensive piece of the armor of God—a fiery weapon that the devil is frightened of and has no defence against.
How can he devise a lie when he doesn’t know what you’re speaking? How can he sabotage the plans he doesn’t know of?

He may try to convince you that you’re just muttering nonsense, but try this: pray in tongues while you read a book or go about your daily chores.
How can you do both at once unless you’re not using your mind to pray in tongues?

I can pray in tongues and write a Bible study or devotional at the same time. That’s because when I pray in tongues, my mind is at rest. It’s not inventing words to speak.
The words are coming from the Holy Spirit inside, rising up from my belly region and all I need to do is yield my tongue to speak those words that my mind didn’t conceive.

“He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, from within him will flow rivers of living water.” But he said this about the Spirit, which those believing in him were to receive. For the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus wasn’t yet glorified.” ‭‭(John‬ ‭7:38-39‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Don’t let the devil deceive you into giving up on this gift. When you pray privately, pray in tongues. It’s far more effective and powerful than you can pray with man’s language.

If you have specific concerns, you can pray in words to calm your soul, but trust that Jesus is so good that He knows and cares for your concerns.
I believe that when you pray in tongues, He eagerly gives you utterances to pray for the solution to those concerns in the best way possible.

“For if I pray in another language, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also. I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. Otherwise if you bless with the spirit, how will he who fills the place of the unlearned say the “Amen” at your giving of thanks, seeing he doesn’t know what you say? For you most certainly give thanks well, but the other person is not built up. I thank my God, I speak with other languages more than you all. However in the assembly I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in another language.” ‭‭(1 Corinthians‬ ‭14:14-19‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

When you pray with others around, it’s better to pray in human language so that the others know what they are saying “Amen” to.
Of course you can all pray together in tongues as well before or after that.

If you have neglected the gift of praying in tongues recently, this post is intended to remind you to stir it up again. Use it wherever and whenever.

“He came to the disciples, and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What, couldn’t you watch with me for one hour? Watch and pray, that you don’t enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”” ‭‭(Matthew‬ ‭26:40-41‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Jesus said in reference to prayer that the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

When we pray with human language, we are limited by our command of language, our awareness of what needs to be prayed for and our knowledge of God’s will as revealed in the Scriptures.
When we pray with human language, we get worn out really fast because of all these limitations.

However when we pray in tongues, all these limits are removed and prayer becomes so restful, peaceful and enjoyable.

“But he will speak to this nation with stammering lips and in another language; to whom he said, “This is the resting place. Give rest to weary”; and “This is the refreshing”; yet they would not hear.” ‭‭(Isaiah‬ ‭28:11-12‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

It truly is a rest for the weary soul and the refreshing we need—the perfect prayer language for a child of God.

“Then he said to me, These waters flow out toward the eastern region, and will go down into the Arabah; and they will go toward the sea; and flow into the sea which will be made to flow out; and the waters will be healed. It shall happen, that every living creature which swarms, in every place where the rivers come, shall live; and there shall be a very great multitude of fish; for these waters have come there, and the waters of the sea shall be healed, and everything shall live wherever the river comes.” ‭‭(Ezekiel‬ ‭47:8-9‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Can I invite you to picture this when you’re praying in tongues? Picture a river of the water of life flowing out from your innermost being, touching all the dead areas in your life and in the world around you—it’s all coming back to life through the life-giving power of the Holy Spirit!

If you haven’t received the spiritual gift of praying in tongues, I want to encourage you that every believer can receive this gift, but not every believer will want this gift.

“He who speaks in another language edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the assembly. Now I desire to have you all speak with other languages, but rather that you would prophesy. For he is greater who prophesies than he who speaks with other languages, unless he interprets, that the assembly may be built up.” ‭‭(1 Corinthians‬ ‭14:4-5‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

The apostle Paul said that he desired all of the believers in the Corinthian church to have the gift of praying in tongues.
However believers will only desire this gift when they have a revelation of the power and purpose of this gift.

In the early church, the gift of praying in tongues was imparted when 1) people placed their faith in the Gospel being preached and 2) when believers who could pray in tongues laid hands on those who didn't have the gift yet and prayed for them to receive it.

"All the prophets testify about him, that through his name everyone who believes in him will receive remission of sins.” While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who heard the word. They of the circumcision who believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was also poured out on the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in other languages and magnifying God." (Acts 10:43-46 WEB)

"When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them and they spoke with other languages and prophesied." (Acts 19:6 WEB)

In essence, it's imparted through one believer's actions to another person. There is a transfer of anointing taking place.

You can watch my video below and receive an impartation of this gift. In it I also demonstrate how praying in tongues can sound like (the words uttered by each believer are different).

I go to jails, rehabs, homeless shelters plus numerous churches! Your notes and sermons allowed me to find rest in Jesus.
