21 May 2017 - His Chastening Brings You Higher - Pastor Joseph Prince Sermon Notes Online - New Creation Church Sermon Notes OnlineOne word from God can change your life forever. Even if you forget God's word, it will still work in you if you had received it. If you're still anxious, worried or fearful about a certain area in your life, that area is still in darkness. That means that God's word for that area of your life has not yet dropped into your heart. It means that revelation for that area is lacking. The revelation has to drop from our heads into our hearts. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies. The purpose for receiving more of God's word is for us to be set free from areas that we are fearful, worried or anxious about. It is also to humble us. If we treat others badly despite knowing God's word, it means that we're just accumulating knowledge. We receive more of God's word also to know the Lord better through revelation. Luke 13:23-25 - Jesus answered the question in this manner to say this: make sure that you're in. There's no point talking about it if you're not in it. “Then one said to Him, “Lord, are there few who are saved?” And He said to them, “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able. When once the Master of the house has risen up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open for us,’ and He will answer and say to you, ‘I do not know you, where you are from,’” (Luke 13:23-25 NKJV)
Luke 20:22-26 - Jesus did not answer the way that the Pharisees wanted Him to.
Jesus is saying with His answer: Israel should be the head of all nations and not be subject to rule by other nations - It is Israel's failure for allowing this to happen. “Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” But He perceived their craftiness, and said to them, “Why do you test Me? Show Me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?” They answered and said, “Caesar’s.” And He said to them, “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” But they could not catch Him in His words in the presence of the people. And they marveled at His answer and kept silent.” (Luke 20:22-26 NKJV) Jesus' answers are moral - they reach our hearts and our conscience. John 8:19 - Jesus is saying, if you don't know Him, then what's the point of asking about His Father? “Then they said to Him, “Where is Your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither Me nor My Father. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also.”” (John 8:19 NKJV) Matthew 2:4-6 - It is possible for someone to have Bible knowledge and to use it against God. The Scribes and the Pharisees knew where the Messiah would be born. They also knew that King Herod's plan was to destroy the Messiah. The scribes and Pharisees did not have a revelation of the Lord. “And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. So they said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet: ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, Are not the least among the rulers of Judah; For out of you shall come a Ruler Who will shepherd My people Israel.’ ”” (Matthew 2:4-6 NKJV) Pride is the worst of sins. All of us have different levels of pride - Self importance and love of pre-eminence. Pride makes the highest of angels into a devil. Prayer is dependence on God. Do we pray for our family, friends, nations, etc? We know that if God blesses, no one can curse. When you pray, use simple words that you can relate to. Don't pray technical prayers. Pray the prayers that God puts in your heart. If you understand grace and see the futility of human effort, you'll be praying all the time. Have you ever experienced hitting a wall in your prayer life and that in that certain area of your life you think that you have no favor? Have you been confessing favor, taking communion, etc and nothing is happening? God is probably giving you more favor than you think. God is bringing you to a higher level than you think. Ask the Lord why nothing is happening. He wants you to learn something from the situation. God loves you too much to let you pass up on the lesson. When something dominates over you instead of you having dominion over it, God is jealous for you - He wants you well, healthy, and abundantly supplied! God doesn't give you sickness or accidents, but He will deal with you. Many times with frustration and disappointment. God will deal with you because He loves you! The God doesn't use the devil. The devil knows the areas in your life that he can mess with. God will make use of situations that the devil causes to bring you to a higher place. James 5:11 - The end result that God has for you is that He will be very compassionate and merciful to you. Job had hidden pride that needed to be dealt with. After he learnt his lesson, Job was restored with double of what he lost. “Indeed we count them blessed who endure. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord—that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful.” (James 5:11 NKJV) Job 42:5-6 - Job had heard about God from others, but now he had a personal revelation of God. God wants you broken in your will, not in your spirit. ““I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, But now my eye sees You. Therefore I abhor myself, And repent in dust and ashes.”” (Job 42:5-6 NKJV) Hebrews 12:2-11 - If you don't love someone, you won't discipline them. Whom God loves, He corrects. You ought to feel loved when He disciplines you. God cares about your health, your life, your success. He doesn't want you to be dominated by sin and pride. Sometimes if your spouse chastens you about something, you should respond by learning from it instead of reacting defensively. Other people won't care enough about you to tell you about the important things. "Chasten" in Greek is "paideuo" which means "child training". God is training us to bring us to a higher place when He chastens us. The word "Live" is "zao" which means maintenance of physical life - God doesn't chastens with death, accidents, sickness or disease. God is always healing. 1) God's word is the highest and best way that He trains us by. 2) For those who backslide and are not in God's word, sometimes God creates situations where they encounter the word - for example: Switching on the TV and watching God's word playing at that moment. 3) Sometimes God uses circumstances to chastens those who backslide. God chastens us for OUR profit. "Painful" can be better translated as "heavy". God's chastening feels heavy. It makes us feel frustrated. Maybe we experience a heavy season in our lives. God only chastens us with negative circumstances when we don't listen to the still-small voice which He speaks to us with. “looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: “My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; For whom the LORD loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.” If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” (Hebrews 12:2-11 NKJV) King Saul was not chastened by God like how King David was. He just took the throne. There was no cave, trial or anything before he ascended to the throne. That's because David was God's choice, not Saul. If you are experiencing God's chastening today, know that you are loved and favored by God - He is preparing you for a higher place. God prepares you before a promotion so that you have the character to carry the position, and you won't become proud - so that you will be safe. God prepared Joseph for greater things. God dealt with him first before Joseph received the position. Joseph forgave his brothers who threw him into the pit. Through God's chastening, he developed the character needed to have his position. Mark 5:23 - The word "Live" is also "zao" which means maintenance of physical life. “and begged Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter lies at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live.”” (Mark 5:23 NKJV) II Samuel 12:23 - King David was under the Law. The unborn child in Bathsheba who died was not taken away because of God's chastening. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were under the Abrahamic Covenant (grace). God chastened them. If you lost a child like David, you will see him/her again in heaven. He or she is growing up in heaven and is spared the vicissitudes of this life. “But now he is dead; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.”” (II Samuel 12:23 NKJV) I Chronicles 13:11 - David made a mistake - He ordered for the Ark of the Covenant tomb transported on an ox cart, like the Philistines. "Outbreak" is "Perez". Singular outbreak. “And David became angry because of the LORD’s outbreak against Uzza; therefore that place is called Perez Uzza to this day.” (I Chronicles 13:11 NKJV) I Chronicles 14:9-11 - Raphaim means "giants". "Rapha" in the word "Rephaim" means "heal". When the enemies of sickness are squatting on your healing and health, God will give you the victory. "Baal Perezim" means "Master of Breakthroughs". When God chastens us, we go through an outbreak (singular). When God gives us the victory over our enemies, He gives us breakthroughs (multiple)! God can convict you and correct you by giving you a victory. “Then the Philistines went and made a raid on the Valley of Rephaim. And David inquired of God, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?” The LORD said to him, “Go up, for I will deliver them into your hand.” So they went up to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there. Then David said, “God has broken through my enemies by my hand like a breakthrough of water.” Therefore they called the name of that place Baal Perazim.” (I Chronicles 14:9-11 NKJV) I Chronicles 15:2 - After God's chastening, David learnt his lesson. “Then David said, “No one may carry the ark of God but the Levites, for the LORD has chosen them to carry the ark of God and to minister before Him forever.”” (I Chronicles 15:2 NKJV) Luke 22:31-32 - When God uses your old name, it is to remind you that you are walking in your old fleshly ways. Satan could demand for Peter because Peter had a problem with ego. He loved have pre-eminence. We can go through less disciplining and testing if we humble ourselves and learn quickly. We can pray for the Lord not to lead us into testing, like in the Lord's Prayer ("...lead us not into temptation (testing), but deliver us from the evil one.") We have a Mediator who prays for us - our Lord Jesus. “And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”” (Luke 22:31-32 NKJV) Your problem is in the areas where you think that you're strong in. Actually the areas where you're weakest in is where you are the strongest in the Lord. God's strength is made perfect in your weakness. God is captured by human weakness. Jacob wrestled with God all night and did not allow Him to leave. He was depending on his own strength. When God touched Jacob's hip, Jacob fell to the ground, weak and trembling. From that point on, God could not leave him alone. God called Jacob "Israel" which means Prince. Isaiah 40:29-31 - God exchanges our human weakness for His supernatural strength. “He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:29-31 NKJV) I Corinthians 3:5-8 - It is God Who gives the increase, not us. Yet God is so gracious that He gives us rewards for the little minuscule things that we do for the Lord. “Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor.” (I Corinthians 3:5-8 NKJV) Pastor Prince's closing prayer: He prayed for us to receive God's wisdom. He also prayed for us not to be led into testing, that we will humble ourselves before God so that we won't have to go through testings. To humble ourselves means to look away from self and look to Jesus.
