The Most Gruesome Chapter of the Bible

The Most Gruesome Chapter of the Bible

In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did that which was right in his own eyes. ‭‭(Judges‬ ‭21:25‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

If you were to ask me which is the creepiest, scariest and most gruesome chapter in the Bible, I would have to say Judges 19.

In it, the depths of moral degradation and depravity can be seen, even though in terms of the volume of bloodshed, it's nothing compared to the Book of Revelation.

If you thought the Bible doesn’t depict or describe sin, then be prepared to be challenged in your belief.

The Bible doesn't portray violence and evil just to scare you or for shock factor like in horror movies. There is a purpose for it, and it's always God-centered.
In this case, we are given a frightful chapter to show what happens when man doesn't want God to be in charge.

Today, we see the world descending into deep moral darkness, just like the times which we will examine in Judges 19.

Sin is not only being tolerated, but even celebrated. If you don’t accept it, then the world will say that you’re being hateful, discriminatory, and intolerant.

“Yahweh saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of man’s heart was continually only evil.” ‭‭(Genesis‬ ‭6:5‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

When we live as though God isn’t King over all and try to be upright according to our own biased sense of morality (we tend to excuse the sins that we or our loved ones commit), the inevitable outcome is wickedness and evil.

If you were to ask me which is the creepiest, scariest and most gruesome chapter in the Bible, I would have to say Judges 19. In it, the depths of moral degradation and depravity can be seen, even though in terms of the volume of bloodshed, it's nothing compared to the Book of Revelation. Depravity all around

Judges 19 tells a story of a Levite (a man belonging to the priestly tribe of Levi who served God in the Tabernacle) and his concubine.

When there’s a concubine involved, you already know there’s going to be unhappiness and unrest in the story.

Significantly, none of the men in the Bible who had concubines (such as Abraham, Jacob, Saul, David and Solomon) ended up with a smooth-sailing, happy family life.

The result was always strife that arose from the deviation from God’s original plan of marriage: one man and one woman.

“In those days, when there was no king in Israel, there was a certain Levite living on the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim, who took for himself a concubine out of Bethlehem Judah. His concubine played the prostitute against him, and went away from him to her father’s house to Bethlehem Judah, and was there for four months. Her husband arose, and went after her, to speak kindly to her, to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of donkeys. She brought him into her father’s house; and when the father of theyoung lady saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.” ‭‭(Judges‬ ‭19:1-3‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

The Levite’s concubine had committed adultery against her husband, but that is nothing shocking because the Levite had already committed adultery as well by having a concubine.
These are the natural consequences of defying God’s original design.

After persuading her at her father’s home to return home with him, the Levite set off days later in the afternoon to go to Shiloh to serve the Lord (the Ark of the Covenant was at Shiloh in those days).

As it was getting late, they had to stop somewhere for the night and choosing not to go into Jebus (later on it became Jerusalem) which wasn’t a territory belonging to Israel yet, the Levite chose to spend the night in Gibeah instead.

We will see later on that they would have been better off in Jebus (a pagan city) than in a city of their own people.

“So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down on them near Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin. They turned aside there, to go in to stay in Gibeah. He went in, and sat down in the street of the city; for there was no one who took them into his house to stay.” ‭‭(Judges‬ ‭19:14-15‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Under the Law, God commanded the tribes of Israel to show hospitality to Levites.

“You shall not forsake the Levite who is within your gates, for he has no portion nor inheritance with you.” ‭‭(Deuteronomy‬ ‭14:27‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

However, the inhabitants of Gibeah showed no kindness to the Levite. This shows the moral state of Israel at the time—they were not living by God’s laws. It was each for themselves.

Only one person offered to help the Levite, and this person was an old man.

“The old man said, “Peace be to you; how ever let me supply all your needs. Just don’t sleep in the street.”” ‭‭(Judges‬ ‭19:20‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

The younger generation were totally depraved, and only this old man who lived in a time before Israel’s depravity got so bad, was willing to show any kindness.

The old man knew the behavior of the citizens of Gibeah well, that it would be dangerous to sleep in the street—like living in a lion’s den.

“As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain base fellows, surrounded the house, beating at the door; and they spoke to themaster of the house, the old man, saying, “Bring out the man who came into your house, that we can have sex with him!” The man, the master of the house, went out to them, and said to them, “No, my brothers, please don’t act so wickedly; since this man has come into my house, don’t do this folly. Behold, here is my virgin daughter and his concubine. I will bring them out now. Humble them, and do with them what seems good to you; but to this man don’t do any such folly.” But the men wouldn’t listen to him: so the man laid hold of his concubine, and brought her out to them; and they had sex with her, and abused her all night until the morning. When the day began to dawn, they let her go.” ‭‭(Judges‬ ‭19:22-25‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Are you shocked that the word “sex” appears twice in the passage above?

Many moral failures happened in the passage above:

  1. The men of Gibeah wanted to have sex (sodomy) with the Levite, and were totally unashamed and violent in their request.
  2. The old man was willing to sacrifice both his virgin daughter and theLevite’s concubine instead of standing up against the evil men. He should be protecting the women instead.
  3. The Levite was cold and unfeeling, thrusting his concubine out to the ravenous wolves to save his own skin.

Why didn’t the men of Gibeah take the old man’s daughter? Perhaps she wasn’t physically attractive.

Don’t feel pity for the concubine as if she was innocent of any crimes because she is just getting the natural consequences for her sin of adultery.
According to the Law, she should be stoned for her sin.

Her lust had drawn her away from the Levite and her consequence was to be destroyed by the manifold lust of the men of Gibeah.
God was righteous in allowing it to happen to her.

“For they sow the wind, and they will reap the whirlwind. He has no standing grain. The stalk will yield no head. If it does yield, strangers will swallow it up.” (Hosea‬ ‭8:7‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

All My Sermon Notes eBooks

$79.00 $39.00
Some people don't buy any sermons because of 'choice paralysis'. There's so many messages to choose from, but they don't know which one they want to get. Even if they bought all the sermons, few people have the time to watch 300 hours worth of sermons to see which messages they like.

If you were to buy each sermon at $10, you'd have to spend approximately $3000 or more to get all the sermons in this collection.

Get all my 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 sermon notes in a downloadable and printable eBook format for only US$39 (limited time sale price). That's 7 books in total!

They were meticulously compiled and they are the precious fruit of many hundreds of hours of work since 2014. If you knew exactly how much work and heart went into it, you would say that it's too reasonably priced!

These sermon notes eBooks are easy to read. You can finish reading the points of each sermon in under 10 mins. They can act as a catalogue for you to browse through the sermons and see which ones you want to purchase. After reading the points, you may want to buy the sermon so you can hear exactly how the point was delivered by the speaker.

You can enjoy these sermon notes eBooks even without internet connection and if you're like me who likes reading physical books, you can print them out and even make your own annotations on them during your personal Bible study time with God.

*New sermon notes ebooks beyond 2021 are not guaranteed as there is no leading to continue at the moment. If there are any new ones, you will receive them for free if you are a customer who bought this product before. "Hi Milton, just finished reading your book. Truly awe-inspiring! The Holy Spirit is all over this. I say this because I only ever listen to teachings from a few ministers, but I kept being drawn to this teaching. After many distractions, I eventually got around to actually watching your video. Echoes of Sodom and Gomorrah

The dark episode is strikingly similar to what happened to Lot in Sodom.

“But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, both young and old, all the people from every quarter. They called to Lot, and said to him, “Where are the men who came in to you this night? Bring them out to us, that we may have sex with them.” Lot went out to them to thedoor, and shut the door after him. He said, “Please, my brothers, don’t act so wickedly. See now, I have two virgin daughters. Please let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them what seems good to you. Only don’t do anything to these men, because they have come under the shadow of my roof.” They said, “Stand back!” Then they said, “This one fellow came in to live as a foreigner, and he appoints himself a judge. Now will we deal worse with you, than with them!” They pressed hard on the man Lot, and came near to break the door. But the men reached out their hand, and brought Lot into the house to them, and shut the door. They struck the men who were at the door of thehouse with blindness, both small and great, so that they wearied themselves to find the door.” (Genesis‬ ‭19:4-11‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Back in Sodom, all the men of Sodom, both young and old, had homosexual lusts.
They must have seen that the two angels that entered Lot’s house were handsome and thus lusted for them.

Notice that the old man in Gibeah’s response was almost the same as Lot’s response: both of them offered two women to the wicked crowd to try and prevent the sin of sodomy.

The difference is that in Lot’s case, the angels struck the wicked men with blindness, preventing anyone from getting raped, but in the old man’s case, no one stopped the concubine from being abused.

Now comes the climax of Judges 19.

After the concubine was violently raped by many men, she bled out and died at the door of the house.
While all this was happening, the Levite was soundly asleep until morning!

After he woke up, without showing any compassion, remorse or offering to treat her wounds, he just commanded her to get up and continue the journey.

It proves that the Levite didn’t love her, and that his actions of speaking sweet words to win his concubine back was just a pretense, probably because he was lusting for her beautiful face and body.

He may have been journeying towards the Ark of the Covenant, but his heart was definitely drifting further from Yahweh.

Even the outward displays of goodness we see nowadays from unbelievers can really just be an act.
We never know what their true motivations are in their heart, but God sees the truth.

“Her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way; and behold, the woman his concubine had fallen down at the door of the house, with her hands on the threshold. He said to her, “Get up, and let us be going!” but no one answered. Then he took her up on the donkey; and the man rose up, and went to his place. When he had come into his house, he took a knife, and cut up his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel. It was so, that all who saw it said, “Such a deed has not been done or seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt to this day! Consider it, take counsel, and speak.”” ‭‭(Judges‬ ‭19:27-30‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

The chapter closes with a gruesome act of butchery like we hear, watch and read about serial killers.
The scene carves itself into our minds.

The Levite chopped up his concubine’s corpse into twelve parts, and sent them on a tour of horror throughout Israel to broadcast the atrocities committed by the men of Gibeah.

At that time, there was no central governing bodies in Israel to appeal to. There was no king, no elder council, and the high priest was probably too busy dealing with the Tabernacle’s issues to care about what happened to theLevite.

In a way, the Levite had no choice but to take matters into his own hands to ensure that people would care about his case.

The lesson from Judges 19 is that when people reject God’s system of governance, and insist on doing what is right in their own eyes, the inevitable end is moral depravity.

We are seeing the wickedness of Sodom and Gibeah happen on a larger scale than ever before in the world.

It’s in these dark times that we are reminded to look up because it signifies that the Rapture is near.
It’s during terrible seasons on earth below that we will lift our heads to look at the beauties and excellencies of Heaven above.

“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we would live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world; looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ;” ‭‭(Titus‬ ‭2:11-13‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Our Lord Jesus is coming back for us really soon, and He, the Righteous Judge, will soon execute justice on this unbelieving world!

To you, what is the darkest chapter of the Bible and why do you say so? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

But then the king asked, “What is the matter?” She replied, “This woman said to me: ‘Come on, let’s eat your son today, then we will eat my son tomorrow.’ So we cooked my son and ate him. Then the next day I said to her, ‘Kill your son so we can eat him,’ but she has hidden her son.”
