The upcoming generations will demand and expect intense customization and personalization. The new generation of youth doesn’t like social constructs and want to be free to do whatever they want. It’s a destructive mindset. I believe that society needs rules and foundation to thrive. This is an original short story I submitted for a short story contest and I did not win any prize. How often can you find a BFF who shares the same birth date as you? We even turned twenty-one together! Besides we stay so near to each other. I’ll get really pissed if you go without me!”, said Lilith over the phone. It was noontime, and May had taken leave from work. She was at home, relaxing. She had made plans to complete something compulsory and important later that day. May replied, “Okay let’s meet downstairs in an hour. We’ll take an autocab there together.”. May dressed herself in a simple white floral dress, threw on a red bolero jacket and put on white flats before leaving the apartment. May was a black-haired young Chinese lady who was petite and slim. She had a sweet and gentle demeanor like an innocent pink rose. She waited a long time at the void deck before Lilith appeared. Lilith came running, dressed in a black cropped top which flaunted her toned golden-brown tummy, a short grey miniskirt, and black sneakers embellished with shiny silver crystals. Her athletic built was a result of years of playing volleyball with her pretty girl friends who had millions of followers on social media. Her long hair was dyed in two-tones: cotton candy pink nearer the roots and royal purple towards the ends. There were silver metal piercings on her bottom lip and navel. Lilith, a gorgeous Eurasian girl resembled a rash and playful hyacinth. “Sorry I’m late! I gotta look cute in case any hot girls or guys show up at the Centre later! Who knows what could happen, you know what I mean?”, Lilith said with a wink. May smiled and shook her head. It was so typical of Lilith to prepare for a grand adventure in any situation. They hailed an autocab using the mobile app. The estimated waiting time was two minutes. “I can’t believe it’s finally time to choose! I didn’t really read up about it but I heard they have many options available these days!”, said Lilith excitedly. May replied, “It’s going to be straightforward for me. I guess I’m more boring and old fashioned. My parents told me to just stick to what was traditionally believed.”. “Yes you are quite the bore. It’s okay, when you see the fun choices you have, maybe it’ll inspire you to choose something interesting!”, said Lilith hopefully. The autocab pulled up before them. There was no human driver inside. As they stepped into the vehicle, a robotic voice greeted them politely. The steering wheel swivelled on its own, heading towards the location that was specified through the app. “Isn’t it terrible how everything is becoming automated nowadays? It’s like society has lost its soul. We’re becoming a disconnected world of robots that are more highly connected than ever before in history,” lamented May in the backseat. Lilith who was sitting next to her replied, “No, I find it extremely convenient. The more automated the better. Then I can spend more time on social media, updating my statuses and sharing new posts. Otherwise my two hundred thousand followers will miss me! Oh yeah, did you have a good time at the birthday celebration last week?”. “You mean at the club? It was a bit too rowdy for me. I appreciate you including me in your mega birthday bash though.”, May said. “Of course, we’re BFFs! Josh organized that party for us. He booked the whole club and arranged everything. He’s not just a handsome face. He’s also sweet and thoughtful.”, swooned Lilith. “He’s alright. Help me thank Josh. Being rich does have its perks I guess.”, May replied. Before long, they reached the stately facility located downtown. It was a fifty-storey tall giant built according to highly-modern architecture. The glowing electronic signboard in front read: Centre for Identity Customization. As May and Lilith walked past, an android female voice chimed, “All citizens of Singapore who reach the age of twenty-one are required by state law to choose their identity. Be whoever you want to be. The possibilities are endless with CIC.” “Did you hear that, May? This is the moment I’ve been dreaming of all my life! Hopefully they have the option of mermaid princess. Haha I’m joking of course...” chirped Lilith enthusiastically. They took a queue number and a mobile tablet device each from the lifelike female robot at the counter who said, “We are experiencing a high volume of customers today. While waiting for your queue number to be called, kindly head to the briefing room on your left to watch a short video about your visit. After you’re done, remember to select your identity choices in the tablet to facilitate smooth proceedings when you report for customization.” May and Lilith slumped on the white seats in the dark briefing room. Rays of light converged to form the four-dimensional likeness of the Director of CIC. The projection spoke, “CIC was founded as a government initiative to provide a greater quality of life for the citizens of Singapore. Increased customization means greater satisfaction for the people. Freedom of choice is the right of the people...we must emphasize that the customization procedure you’re about to undergo here at CIC is highly confidential. To protect the sanctity of this rite of passage for every Singaporean child, state law requires you to keep whatever you see here today as a secret. Any attempt to communicate about your experience is an offence that is punishable by death...”. “They don’t have as many choices as I thought. Darn, if only I was born later. Maybe the option of mermaid princess would be available then. Hmm, what should I choose? Should I be a male plant, a genderless insect, an asexual human, or a female cat?”, Lilith said with her well-trimmed eyebrows knitted into an overwhelmed frown as they exited the briefing room. “For me, it’s simple. In the past when people were born as girls, they were automatically regarded as women when they reached adulthood. I don’t see the need to alter that natural and perfectly logical pattern of life,” said May calmly. “Babe, sometimes I seriously wonder which century you think you’re living in. Nowadays people are free to be who they want to be. We’re no longer enslaved by the outdated constructs of the past. We should always have the right to choose! That’s why I totally love the idea of CIC. It’s so progressive and forward-thinking! Customization is the way of the future. Okay, female cat it is. Cats go viral on social media easily. If my new identity is a cat, who knows, I may even gain a million followers by the end of tomorrow,” Lilith squealed. The two of them tapped their respective choices on the tablet screens. Minutes later, a prompt appeared on their screens. May was instructed to report to level three whereas Lilith was told to make her way to level forty-six. “Wow my floor is so much higher than yours. I guess that means I made a better choice? I guess this is where we say goodbye for now. Let’s meet at the entrance of the building after we’re done?”, said Lilith. May nodded in agreement. May stepped out of the elevator on level three. A spherical, adult-sized robot dressed like nurse hovered along the hallway towards her and told her to enter the room on her right. The row of lights on its face blinked as it spoke. Inside the white room, May was greeted by another robot dressed like a doctor. She saw a cylindrical opaque capsule next to it, standing in the middle of the room. It looked large enough to contain an elephant. “You have selected Chinese, female, and human, with no additional requests. Do you confirm this? The customization process is strictly irreversible.”, asked the robot doctor. May replied, “Yes I do.”. “Okay then please step into the Customizer for the procedure. After you step in, please remove all your clothes, shoes, jewelry, belongings, and leave it all in the container that will descend from above. Then hold the two metal bars firmly with one hand each, and wait for the machine to initialize. Thank you for customizing your identity with CIC.” May did as she was told and stood inside the Customizer, naked and shivering from the cold. Enclosed spaces made her feel nervous. The machine whirred, and laser-like beams of red lights scanned her body. Then bright flash of white light temporarily fazed her vision. A loud whooshing sound announced the end of the process. May quickly retrieved and put on her clothes before exiting the Customizer. She returned to the ground level to wait for Lilith. As she expected, Lilith was nowhere to be seen. May was always the one to wait for Lilith—that extroverted socialite was never early. May walked along the brightly-lit corridors and admired the various posters that were framed and hung on the walls. One of them with various headshots of smiling people read: Customization is the future of mankind. Another poster showing a good-looking young man gripping the metal bars in a Customizer said: The power to choose is in your hands. May regarded them as propaganda to market the idea of customization to the general public. She was still not sold on necessity of the idea. Hours went by as May paced the halls repeatedly. She was familiar enough with the layout to navigate the place with her eyes closed. Her heart felt constricted and filled with worry. Lilith was still missing. May had texted and called her numerous times and received no response. “Where could she have gone? Maybe she left without me and forgot about our arrangement? She probably misplaced her phone too. I wouldn’t put it past her,” May thought to herself as she walked out of the building. ••• Just as May entered an autocab, a white truck drove past the vehicle and turned into the back of CIC. There was a loading bay there. A robotic nurse emerged from a cargo lift and pushed a heavy trolley covered by a thick blue sheet towards the truck. “Here is today’s shipment. Please take them to the designated drop-off points and release them there. These creatures are depleting from the ecosystem due to increasing incidents of killings and abuse. If their population size drops any lower, we could be facing an islandwide rat infestation really soon as their apex predator diminishes from the environment,” said the robo-nurse to the male truck driver in his thirties. They began to lift small cages onto the back of the truck. They did so in an efficient, systematic fashion. It appeared like a familiar daily routine for them. Finally, the robo-nurse said, “Here’s the last one,” and handed a cage tagged with a label that wrote: Lilith Turner. Inside the mini prison sat a peculiar black cat with pink and purple fur on the top of its head. It mewed and looked at the driver with pitiful eyes. The pretty feline lay defeatedly in the cage and thought to itself, “May, I should have listened to you! A girl should grow up to become a woman. I don’t want to be a mermaid princess or anything else. I just want to be myself again!” ••• A week later on Saturday, May went for an afternoon stroll with her parents at East Coast Park. As she alighted from the car, a cool sea breeze caressed her face like a mother lovingly embraces her child. “It’s been a week and Lilith is still missing. She hasn’t even posted anything on her social media accounts. I wonder where she disappeared to. I went to her apartment to ask Mrs Turner but she just cried and refused to tell me anything. She even asked me to leave and never contact them again. She’s never acted so strangely before. Do you have any idea what’s going on,” May asked her parents. Mr and Mrs Wu exchanged uneasy glances. Mrs Wu said in hushed tones, “It’s not that we don’t want to tell you, but we can’t. It would put your life in danger. We had a group of close school friends many years ago who were very vocal about... certain experiences and they were executed. We’ve been traumatized ever since that incident. Please try to understand, it’s for your own good.” A raging flame rose up in May’s heart and she shouted, “Stop lying to me! You just want to hide things from me again. I’m not a child anymore—I’m a legal adult. We already don’t talk on weekdays ‘cos you’re always at work, and now you want to destroy our superficial weekend relationship too? No, YOU try to understand. Lilith is my best friend and she’s the only one I can talk to about things! Now she’s gone and I’m all alone,” before dashing off in anger. May ran a long distance and stopped at a wooden park bench, panting heavily. She deemed that it was far enough and her parents wouldn’t be able to find her so easily. Hot tears ran down her cheeks as she pounded the seat with her fist. She used so much force that red blood spots appeared on her knuckles. The stinging pain on her hand felt insignificant compared to the brokenness of her heart. She felt like the only person left in the world. Suddenly, at the corner of her eye, she noticed a black cat bounding towards her. Mistaking it for a ferocious feral, May screamed in fear and threw a broken branch at it. Unfazed, the persistent animal leaped onto the seat beside her. Upon closer inspection, it showed signs of abuse. Its front left leg was bloodied and it moved with an obvious limp. The cat had deep gash across its right eye and it seemed like that eye was blind—the pupil was grey and foggy, like that of a fish which has been dead a long time. The dirty tuft of pink and purple hair on its head reminded her of Lilith. The cat rested cozily next to May and rubbed its head softly against her waist while making cute mewing sounds. “Oh no, someone hurt you. Poor thing. Your fur really looks like my best friend who has gone missing. I’ll name you Lilith after her. Looks like you’re my only friend now,” May said as she gently stroked the cat’s disheveled fur and felt a profound sense of connection with the animal. It felt like they had know each other for years. May continued, “Stray cats can’t be adopted, so I’ll come back every week to this bench and bring yummy snacks for you. I can tell you what happened to me and treat your wounds at the same time. Don’t worry Lilith, I’ll take care of you, my little kitty friend.” That day, a lifelong friendship that transcended species had begun. THE END Sandcastles Don't Last Forever
