Joshua 6:2 - Giving into your hand is not the same as possessing something. Joshua had to go in to possess Jericho. 

“And the LORD said to Joshua: “See! I have given Jericho into your hand, its king, and the mighty men of valor.” (Joshua 6:2 NKJV)

Joshua 5:2 - Why is circumcision the key to possessing Jericho? To know, we must look at the first mention of circumcision. 

“At that time the LORD said to Joshua, “Make flint knives for yourself, and circumcise the sons of Israel again the second time.”” (Joshua 5:2 NKJV)

Genesis 12:1-2, 4 - Abram at 75 years old was promised the land and a great nation. Just like Joshua, the land was given into his hand. 

“Now the LORD had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, From your family And from your father’s house, To a land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing... So Abram departed as the LORD had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.” (Genesis 12:1-2, 4 NKJV)

Genesis 17:9-11 - Abram was 99 years old here. Before Abram started to see the manifestation of the promises that God made to him when he was 75, God introduced the sign of circumcision.

“And God said to Abraham: “As for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations. This is My covenant which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: Every male child among you shall be circumcised; and you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and you.” (Genesis 17:9-11 NKJV)

True circumcision is spiritual, not physical

Joshua 5:2-9 - Gilgal means “roll away”. Circumcision was a physical act under the Old Testament.

“At that time the LORD said to Joshua, “Make flint knives for yourself, and circumcise the sons of Israel again the second time.” So Joshua made flint knives for himself, and circumcised the sons of Israel at the hill of the foreskins. And this is the reason why Joshua circumcised them: All the people who came out of Egypt who were males, all the men of war, had died in the wilderness on the way, after they had come out of Egypt. For all the people who came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the wilderness, on the way as they came out of Egypt, had not been circumcised. For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people who were men of war, who came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they did not obey the voice of the LORD —to whom the LORD swore that He would not show them the land which the LORD had sworn to their fathers that He would give us, “a land flowing with milk and honey.” Then Joshua circumcised their sons whom He raised up in their place; for they were uncircumcised, because they had not been circumcised on the way. So it was, when they had finished circumcising all the people, that they stayed in their places in the camp till they were healed. Then the LORD said to Joshua, “This day I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” Therefore the name of the place is called Gilgal to this day.” (Joshua 5:2-9 NKJV)

Romans 4:11 - Circumcision is a sign that we are righteous by faith, made perfectly righteous by Jesus. 
In the New Testament for us today, it is something spiritual, not physical. 
Circumcision is dealing a death blow to a part of an anatomy that produces life, which makes a man weak. 
It represents making the flesh weak and dead, so that God can take over. 
It is admitting that man doesn’t have the strength to bring life on his own and needs God to do so. 

“And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while still uncircumcised, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they are uncircumcised, that righteousness might be imputed to them also,” (Romans 4:11 NKJV)

The key to possessing our inheritance is to know that we are the righteousness of God in Christ by faith. 

The best of man (political leaders, religious leaders, celebrities) cannot make it on their own. 
Everyone needs the righteousness of God in Christ - the life of God in them. 

If you know that you are the righteousness of God in Christ, then you can come boldly to the throne of grace today. 

We lie and cheat when we don’t believe that we are the righteousness of God in Christ. 

By the abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness, we can reign in life by Christ Jesus. ​

Surround your problem and sound the ram's horn

Joshua 6:12-16 - We are a royal priesthood - kings and priests to God in Christ Jesus. 
The ark of the Lord represents Jesus. Jesus was in their midst. 
Jericho looked more like a problem than a promised land. 
It had thick walls - an outer wall, an embankment and then an even thicker inner wall. 
The priests surrounded the problem instead of letting the problem surround them. 
While walking around Jericho, the ram’s horn was sounded.
The ram’s horn is taken from a ram that has been slain - it represents Jesus’ death at the cross. 
Sounding the ram’s horn means the proclaiming the death of Jesus. 
Where there’s a problem that needs to be overcome, listen to sermons that proclaim Jesus’ finished work. 
Hearing the ram’s horn being sounded is also hearing the love of God. The cross is God’s demonstration of love for us. 
The children of Israel surrounded Jericho for 7 days. 7 is the number of rest. God created the world in 7 days and then He rested.
You can surround your problems while resting in Jesus’ finished work. 

“And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the LORD. Then seven priests bearing seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of the LORD went on continually and blew with the trumpets. And the armed men went before them. But the rear guard came after the ark of the LORD, while the priests continued blowing the trumpets. And the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. So they did six days. But it came to pass on the seventh day that they rose early, about the dawning of the day, and marched around the city seven times in the same manner. On that day only they marched around the city seven times. And the seventh time it happened, when the priests blew the trumpets, that Joshua said to the people: “Shout, for the LORD has given you the city!” (Joshua 6:12-16 NKJV)

Romans 4:13 - We are heirs - we inherit God’s promises by faith, as sons, not as slaves.

“For the promise that he would be the heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.” (Romans 4:13 NKJV)

When we’re in a mode of self-blame or blaming others, feeling stressed out and depressed, we need to release ourselves and others into grace. 
God’s grace is made perfect in your weakness. 

If we can possess this first gift of righteousness, then we can possess everything else too. 

A person can be saved and yet he may not have possessed his salvation yet. 
You need to know with certainty and actively possess your inheritance in Christ - it’s yours! 

There’s a difference between grace and entitlement. 
Grace is unmerited, not an entitlement. 

Having an attitude of entitlement before God just makes one angry, bitter and disappointed. 

We are like the woman caught in the act of adultery, Zacchaeus, and the Levite who crossed over to the other side and ignored the injured traveler. 
None of us deserve God’s goodness, but He gave it to us by His grace. 

Remember afresh that Jesus died for you, feel thankful for it, and pray for God to transform you. 

Humble people are the ones who can receive grace and impart grace. 
Receive the spirit of grace that can help you to possess your inheritance. 

Closing Prayer:
Pastor Lian prayed that none of us should have the spirit of an orphan and that as sons of God we can enjoy every blessing and goodness of God. This week ahead will be your best yet. In Jesus’ name, Amen! ​
