12 February 2023 - God’s Love Casts Out All Fear - New Creation Church Sermon Notes (Pastor Gabriel Tan)

The Word of God has the answer to all our greatest fears.

Genesis 3:8-12 - This was the first occurrence of fear in the Bible.
God knew where Adam was but asked that question to let Adam know that he had been separated from fellowship with Him.
We sin because of fear and we fear because of sin. We lie and blame others because of fear.

“They heard Yahweh God’s voice walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Yahweh God among the trees of the garden. Yahweh God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” The man said, “I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; so I hid myself.” God said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”” (Genesis‬ ‭3‬:‭8‬-‭12‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

Genesis 15:1 - God told Abram “Al Tirah”(don’t be afraid) in Hebrew.
This word came to Abram after Abram had gone to battle to rescue his nephew Lot.

“After these things Yahweh’s word came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Don’t be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”” (Genesis‬ ‭15‬:‭1‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

Genesis 14:18-24 - Melchizedek declared that Abram belonged to God.
The ruler of this world (the devil) only wants people. He wants to corrupt the hearts and minds of everyone, including your children. The devil does not care about material goods—he is after souls.
Let the Word of God be your final authority—not the court of public opinion.

“Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High. He blessed him, and said, “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth. Blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” Abram gave him a tenth of all. The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people, and take the goods for yourself.” Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have lifted up my hand to Yahweh, God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth, that I will not take a thread nor a sandal strap nor anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’ I will accept nothing from you except that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men who went with me: Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre. Let them take their portion.”” (Genesis‬ ‭14‬:‭18‬-‭24‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

Genesis 15:2-6 - Abram was afraid and complaining but God still promised to bless Abram.
The word translated as “believed” in the passage below is “aman” in Hebrew which is where we get Amen. To say Amen is to declare that you believe God.
Righteousness does not come from deeds—good works are the fruit of righteousness. Righteousness can only be received as a gift from God.

“Abram said, “Lord Yahweh, what will you give me, since I go childless, and he who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” Abram said, “Behold, you have given no children to me: and, behold, one born in my house is my heir.” Behold, Yahweh’s word came to him, saying, “This man will not be your heir, but he who will come out of your own body will be your heir.” Yahweh brought him outside, and said, “Look now toward the sky, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” He said to Abram, “So your offspring will be.” He believed in Yahweh, who credited it to him for righteousness.” (Genesis‬ ‭15‬:‭2‬-‭6‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

The Lord’s love will dispel your fears and activate your faith

Matthew 14:22-23 - After doing mighty miracles, Jesus made time to pray alone. Even Jesus prayed—we should too.

“Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. After he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain by himself to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone.” (Matthew‬ ‭14‬:‭22‬-‭23‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

Matthew 14:24-27 - Even though the disciples were fearful, Jesus did not scold them. Instead, He encouraged and comforted them in a cheerful way.

“But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary. In the fourth watch of the night, Jesus came to them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It’s a ghost!” and they cried out for fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Cheer up! It is I! Don’t be afraid.”” (Matthew‬ ‭14‬:‭24‬-‭27‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

Matthew 14:28-29 - Like Peter, your fear is dispelled, your faith can be activated.

“Peter answered him and said, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters.” He said, “Come!” Peter stepped down from the boat and walked on the waters to come to Jesus.” (Matthew‬ ‭14‬:‭28‬-‭29‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

Matthew 14:30-31 - Jesus immediately rescued Peter first, and only gently rebuked him after that.

“But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”” (Matthew‬ ‭14‬:‭30‬-‭31‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

Matthew 17:1 - Peter (stone), James (supplant/replace), John (grace). The stone (the Law) has been replaced by Grace.

“After six days, Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John his brother, and brought them up into a high mountain by themselves.” (Matthew‬ ‭17‬:‭1‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

Matthew 17:2-6 - Peter thought he was doing Jesus a service but he was corrected by God the Father who spoke out of the bright cloud.

“He was changed before them. His face shone like the sun, and his garments became as white as the light. Behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them talking with him. Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you want, let’s make three tents here: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them. Behold, a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.” When the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces, and were very afraid.” (Matthew‬ ‭17‬:‭2‬-‭6‬ ‭WEBUS)

Matthew 17:7 - The very first words Jesus said after His Father’s affirmation is “don’t be afraid”.

“Jesus came and touched them and said, “Get up, and don’t be afraid.”” (Matthew‬ ‭17‬:‭7‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

1 John 4:17-19 - Fear comes from the dreadful expectation of punishment.
We cannot psych ourselves out of fear. Receiving God’s perfect love casts out fear.
We are empowered to love the Lord because He first loved us.

“In this, love has been made perfect among us, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment, because as he is, even so we are in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment. He who fears is not made perfect in love. We love him, because he first loved us.” (1 John‬ ‭4‬:‭17‬-‭19‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

When Mary of Bethany sat at Jesus’ feet, she was probably not looking at His feet, but into His face that emanated love.

The breastplate of the high priest of Israel is worn close to the high priest’s heart. The twelve tribes of Israel are each represented by a precious stone fixed onto the breastplate. It is a picture of how beloved and precious we are to Jesus our great High Priest.

Galatians 3:29 - In Christ, we are Abraham’s offspring and heirs according to God’s promise.

“If you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring and heirs according to promise.” (Galatians‬ ‭3‬:‭29‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)
