2 April 2023 - Unpacking The Passion Of Christ - New Creation Church Sermon Notes - Pastor Lawrence Lim

New Sermon Notes: Pastor Lawrence Lim expounded on the sufferings and death of Jesus Christ and how it affects us as believers in Him. This Gospel message is important for us to understand the finished work of Christ at the cross!

Exodus 32:3 - In this verse we find “Aleph Tav”. It is the divine signature of Jesus Christ. In the Book of Revelation, He calls Himself “The first and the last”. Aleph is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet and Tav is the last letter.
The golden rings in the ears represent hearing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The Gospel is meant to be received by hearing it. Every time you hear the Gospel preached, something good happens to you.

“All the people took off the golden rings which were in their ears, and brought them to Aaron.” (Exodus‬ ‭32‬:‭3‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

The anointing of God is primarily for you to preach the Gospel and to heal the broken-hearted and sick. To know the will of God, we look at Jesus and what He did and said.

Romans 1:16-17 - We receive the power of God by hearing the Gospel of Christ, not by doing with our hands.

“For I am not ashamed of the Good News of Christ, because it is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first, and also for the Greek. For in it is revealed God’s righteousness from faith to faith. As it is written, “But the righteous shall live by faith.”” (Romans‬ 1‬:‭16‬-‭17‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

God’s word is life and health to all your flesh.

The “Passion” refers to the sufferings and death of our Lord Jesus Christ.

There is nothing you can do to make God love you more. To suggest that means you’re saying that God held back in loving you. No, He loves us to the uttermost, and He will never love us less.

Luke 22:44 - Just the anticipation of becoming sin at the cross caused Jesus to sweat blood. Doctors call this condition “hematidrosis”: when one is under extreme stress, the blood capillaries burst and intermingles with perspiration.
Jesus sweat blood to redeem us from the curse of sweat that was pronounced upon man in the Garden of Eden.
His sweat also dripped onto the ground that was cursed as well.
Thanks to Jesus’ blood, blessings come easy to us and wherever we walk is favored ground.

“Being in agony, he prayed more earnestly. His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.” (Luke‬ ‭22‬:‭44‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

Jesus said “I AM” and the temple guards who came to arrest Him in the Garden of Gethsemane fell back to the ground. Jesus was not captured because He was helpless. He willingly gave up His life for us.

In the midst of the chaos, Peter severed Malchus’ ear. Jesus who is always full of peace, picked up the severed ear and restored the ear to Malchus, healing him. He healed a person who wanted Him dead.

Jesus lived by His words of “love your enemies”. Let go of grudges and forgive those who have hurt you, just as God has forgiven you in Christ.

At supper on the night of Passover, Jesus already knew that Judas was going to betray Him, and yet He still washed Jesus’ feet. Back then, washing a person’s feet was the job of the lowliest servants. It was an act of love that Jesus did.

Don’t punish yourself and live in condemnation. God loves you and has forgiven you. It is a new beginning today. God’s compassions fail not.

Peter boasted that even if all the disciples forsook Jesus, he wouldn’t. Jesus told him that before the rooster crowed, Peter would betray Him three times. Peter denied Jesus with cursing and swearing, and when the rooster crowed, Jesus turned to look at Peter with eyes of love. That is why Peter cried.

Even if you have failed, God can still use you. Peter denied Jesus three times and yet Jesus restored him to the ministry of apostleship. Peter was used to preach to multitudes on the Day of Pentecost and three thousand souls were saved.

God wants to restore the hearing of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the Kingdom (which the church is a part of) in these last days

Pontius Pilate thought that by having Jesus scourged, the crowds would be satisfied and leave the matter alone. Little did he know that they would cry out for Jesus to be crucified.

Under Roman law, a criminal who was sentenced to be crucified did not have to be scourged—there was no point since they would be dead. Jesus suffered both capital punishments. Pilate played a role in fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah 53. By Jesus’ stripes, we are healed.

The Bible says “the lamb slain from the foundation of the world”. Long before the world was created, it was already determined that Jesus would die for our sins.

The Bible even records the name of Simon the Cyrenian and the names of his children. Simon carried the cross for Jesus when He had no strength left to do it. Likely Simon and his children got saved. When you do something inconvenient for the Lord that takes sacrifice, you may not realize it at the time, but it can be for your benefit.

The seven statements that Jesus spoke at the cross:

1) “Father forgive them for they do not know what they do.”
Forgiveness for all His enemies, even for those who tried to kill Him.

2) “Assuredly I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”
The thief only said “Remember me Lord.” He could not even do any good works when stuck on the cross. This shows how we are saved by faith alone.

3) “Woman, behold your son. Behold your mother!”
Whatever struggles you are facing, just behold the Son. He will make a way for you.

4 ) “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
The whole world was covered in darkness for three hours because the light of the world was being extinguished. God the Father literally forsook Him at the cross. Jesus chose to be forsaken so that you will never be forsaken.

5) “I thirst!”
Jesus rejected the initial drink because He did not want the pain to be numbed. He wanted to bear the full brunt of it so that we would be fully blessed. Jesus then took the sour wine at the end which is a picture of taking the curse (“our fathers have their teeth set on edge…”) upon Himself.

6) “It is finished!”
Everything that was needed for you to be saved has been paid. It is finished.

7) “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.”
Jesus did not die of weakness. He consciously gave up His spirit to God the Father in submission and worship.

Jesus healed Malchus’ ear. The name “Malchus” means “kingdom”. Jesus wants to restore hearing to the Kingdom in these last days.

Isaiah 25:6-8 - The choice meat is a picture of revelations for mature Christians. Choice wine is a picture of revelation of Jesus’ blood and His finished work.
The word translated as “veil” is “masaka” in Hebrew. Prophetically, the wearing of masks has been removed from all over the world.
The next big event to happen is “He has swallowed up death forever” which refers to the Rapture.

“In this mountain, Yahweh of Armies will make all peoples a feast of choice meat, a feast of choice wines, of choice meat full of marrow, of well refined choice wines. He will destroy in this mountain the surface of the covering that covers all peoples, and the veil that is spread over all nations. He has swallowed up death forever! The Lord Yahweh will wipe away tears from off all faces. He will take the reproach of his people away from off all the earth, for Yahweh has spoken it.” (‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭25‬:‭6‬-‭8‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)

Jeremiah 23:3-6 - The happiest person on earth became the man of sorrows at the cross so that we would become the righteousness of God in Him.

““I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they will be fruitful and multiply. I will set up shepherds over them who will feed them. They will no longer be afraid or dismayed, neither will any be lacking,” says Yahweh. “Behold, the days come,” says Yahweh, “that I will raise to David a righteous Branch; and he will reign as king and deal wisely, and will execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell safely. This is his name by which he will be called: Yahweh our righteousness.” (Jeremiah‬ ‭23‬:‭3‬-‭6‬ ‭WEBUS‬‬)
