16 August 2020 - The Law Kills While Grace Gives Life - Pastor Joseph Prince Sermon Notes - New Creation Church Sermon Notes

Pastor Joseph Prince taught us how God's heart is not in executing judgment, but in supplying Grace to man. The Law of Moses is the ministry of condemnation that kills, while Grace is the ministry of the Holy Spirit which gives life!

Romans 3:19-20 - The Law is called the ministry of condemnation. It produces death because man has no ability to keep the Law.
God designed for the Law to bring man to despair so that no man can boast.
Every mouth is stopped and every man is considered guilty before God.

“Now we know that whatever things the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be closed, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God. Because by the works of the law, no flesh will be justified in his sight. For through the law comes the knowledge of sin.” (Romans‬ ‭3:19-20‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Romans 6:14 - In the Old Covenant, you have to do to become.
In the New Covenant, you become first, and then you do.
You start from being complete in Christ and then we are told to walk out that completeness.
The Law demands from man. Grace supplies to man.
Under Grace, sin has no dominion over us.
Under the Law, God says “You shall not...” Man is expected to do.
Under Grace, God says “I will...” He is the one doing.

“For sin will not have dominion over you. For you are not under law, but under grace.” (Romans‬ ‭6:14‬ ‭WEB‬)

2 Corinthians 3:6-7 - When the Law was given, three thousand people died. When the Holy Spirit was given, three thousand souls were saved.
The letter (the Law) kills, whereas the Spirit (through Grace) gives life.
The Ten Commandments is the only part of the Law that was engraved on stones.
The rest of the commandments and statutes were written on parchments.

“who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away,” (II Corinthians‬ ‭3:6-7‬ ‭NKJV‬‬)

1 Corinthians 15:56 - The more you try to keep the Law, the more you will stir up sin your life.
God allowed this so that man would understand that sinful nature in them.
The fruits of the Holy Spirit comes as a fruit of Grace.
Grace is not behavior modification, but heart transformation.
Those who try to keep the Law have a pseudo-morality but they don’t have it in their heart to keep the Law. When no one is looking, they revert to their sinful behavior.

“The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.” (1 Corinthians‬ ‭15:56‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

2 Corinthians 3:7-9 - The ministry of condemnation (the Law) has glory, but the ministry of the Spirit (Grace) exceeds much more in glory.
Some revivals in modern times were based on preaching of the Law. The Law has glory but it passes away.

“But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away, how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious? For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, the ministry of righteousness exceeds much more in glory.” (II Corinthians‬ ‭3:7-9‬ ‭NKJV‬‬)

God's heart isn't in executing judgment, but in supplying Grace to man

1 Kings 17:1 - Under the Law, God’s prophets were sent to minister condemnation and judgment.
Elijah means “Yahweh is God”.
Elisha means “Yahweh saves”.
In contrast to Elijah’s ministry, Elisha’s ministry is a ministry of Grace.

“Elijah the Tishbite, who was one of the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As Yahweh, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.”” (1 Kings‬ ‭17:1‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

James 5:17-18 - It’s like God was so eager to send rain (blessing), but reluctant to allow famine (judgment) in Israel.
Elijah had to pray earnestly for the drought.

“Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain, and it didn’t rain on the earth for three years and six months. He prayed again, and the sky gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.” (James‬ ‭5:17-18‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Lamentations 3:33 - God’s heart is not in executing judgment, but in dealing graciously with man.

“For he does not afflict willingly, nor grieve the children of men.” (Lamentations‬ ‭3:33‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Romans 11:2-5 - Moses would rather himself be cut off and the children of Israel be saved.
Elijah did not intercede for Israel. He pleaded with God against Israel.
Elijah justified himself and condemned Israel.

“God didn’t reject his people, which he foreknew. Or don’t you know what the Scripture says about Elijah? How he pleads with God against Israel: “Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have broken down your altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.” But how does God answer him? “I have reserved for myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.” (Romans‬ ‭11:2-5‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

1 Kings 19:16 - God rebuked Elijah for condemning Israel, and asked him to anoint Elisha to be prophet in his place. It was a humbling experience for him.

“Anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi to be king over Israel; and anoint Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah to be prophet in your place.” (1 Kings‬ ‭19:16‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

On the Mount of Transfiguration, Jesus was transfigured into a form of divine glory.
Moses (represents the Law) and Elijah (represents the prophets) appeared beside Him.
Peter tried to put the three (Jesus, Moses and Elijah) on the same level, but God corrected him, saying to hear Jesus.
Then Moses and Elijah disappeared and only Jesus remained there.
We are to listen to Jesus, not to the Law or the prophets.

Luke ‭4:26 - Jezebel was from Sidon. That’s why the people got so angry because Sidon is associated with Jezebel who caused Israel to descend into terrible idolatry (worshipping Baal).

“Elijah was sent to none of them, except to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.” (Luke‬ ‭4:26‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

On Mount Carmel, God consumed Elijah’s sacrifice with fire from Heaven, but it didn’t consume the sinful people of Israel.
God’s heart is in consuming the sacrifice as a substitute because He doesn’t want mankind to be consumed by judgment.

Later on, Elijah called down fire from Heaven to consume Ahab’s soldiers. It is a picture of God’s judgment.
If people will not receive Jesus as Lord, they will have to face the fire of God’s judgment later themselves.

Romans 5:20 - The Law is not the main agenda. It came in to show man his own sinfulness.
Before God gave the Law, the children of Israel boasted in their own ability to keep God’s commandments.
They have not even heard what the commandments are and they already presumed their own ability to keep them.

“The law came in besides, that the trespass might abound; but where sin abounded, grace abounded more exceedingly;” (Romans‬ ‭5:20‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

1 Kings 19:9-13 - God is not in expressions of judgment—He is in the still, small (gentle) voice.
Elijah was hiding in the cave during the earthquake, strong wind and fire, but it was the still small voice that caused him to come out.
Only Grace can draw men’s hearts and transform even the most hardened sinner.

“He came to a cave there, and camped there; and behold, Yahweh’s word came to him, and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He said, “I have been very jealous for Yahweh, the God of Armies; for the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.” He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before Yahweh.” Behold, Yahweh passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before Yahweh; but Yahweh was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake; but Yahweh was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake a fire passed; but Yahweh was not in the fire. After the fire, there was a still small voice. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle, went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave. Behold, a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”” (1 Kings‬ ‭19:9-13‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Revelation 16:11 - This demonstrates that judgment cannot cause men to repent. Only Grace can do it.

“and they blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores. They didn’t repent of their works.” (Revelation‬ ‭16:11‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Luke 9:52-56 - God’s heart is not in judgment.
James and John thought that Elijah calling fire down from Heaven to consume the soldiers was sanctioned by God.
We cannot have this spirit of the Old Testament today. It is not approved by Jesus.

“and sent messengers before his face. They went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, so as to prepare for him. They didn’t receive him, because he was traveling with his face set towards Jerusalem. When his disciples, James and John, saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from the sky, and destroy them, just as Elijah did?” But he turned and rebuked them, “You don’t know of what kind of spirit you are. For the Son of Man didn’t come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.” They went to another village.” (Luke‬ ‭9:52-56‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

1 Corinthians 14:3 - New Testament prophets and believers speak to men for edification, exhortation and consolation when they prophesy.
It’s not about judging for their sins and condemning them.
That is the Old Testament manner of spirit that Jesus doesn’t approve of.

“But he who prophesies speaks to men for their edification, exhortation, and consolation.” (1 Corinthians‬ ‭14:3‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Matthew 11:13 - The ministry of condemnation ends with John.
John the Baptist was the last prophet who ministered condemnation.

“For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.” (Matthew‬ ‭11:13‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Luke 24:27 - The Bible says that you will bring forth treasures from the old because of the new.
New Testament truths help us to see truths about Jesus in the Old Testament.

“Beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.” (Luke‬ ‭24:27‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Numbers 30:13-16 - The woman is a picture of Israel.
At the foot of Mount Sinai, the children of Israel vowed to keep all the commandments of God, before the Law was given.
In order to redeem Israel from her vows, Jesus bore her iniquity at the cross.

“Every vow, and every binding oath to afflict the soul, her husband may establish it, or her husband may make it void. But if her husband altogether hold his peace at her from day to day, then he establishes all her vows, or all her bonds, which are on her. He has established them, because he held his peace at her in the day that he heard them. But if he shall make them null and void after that he has heard them, then he shall bear her iniquity.” These are the statutes which Yahweh commanded Moses, between a man and his wife, between a father and his daughter, being in her youth, in her father’s house.” (Numbers‬ ‭30:13-16‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Galatians 3:13 - Stoning was the customary way of executing a sinner at that time in Israel. But why was Jesus crucified and not stoned?
Jesus died on a cross so that He could bear the curse of the Law in our place, for cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree. He has redeemed us from the curse.
If you want to be justified by the Law, you have to keep all the commandments in both thought and deeds, if not you will come under the curse of the Law.

“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,”” (Galatians‬ ‭3:13‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

2 Corinthians 3:12-18 - Moses was wise to veil his face because the children of Israel who see the glory on his face fading away may mistakenly think that Moses had sinned or backslid.
When you study God’s word, remove the veil by seeking and revealing Jesus in the Scriptures.
Moses face had the light of the Law that produces sin consciousness, causing the people to avoid him in fear.
When Jesus came down from the Mount of Transfiguration, the people went to him.

“Having therefore such a hope, we use great boldness of speech, and not as Moses, who put a veil on his face, that the children of Israel wouldn’t look steadfastly on the end of that which was passing away. But their minds were hardened, for until this very day at the reading of the old covenant the same veil remains, because in Christ it passes away. But to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart. But whenever one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face seeing the glory of the Lord as in a mirror, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord, the Spirit.” (2 Corinthians‬ ‭3:12-18‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Jesus taught that you cannot put new wine in old wineskins.
The new wine is a picture of truths of the New Covenant of Grace.
The old wineskin is a picture of the Old Covenant of the Law.
You cannot mix Law and Grace.
What man calls ‘balance’, Jesus calls mixture.
Be fully under grace. The Law brings condemnation and it kills. Grace gives life through the Holy Spirit.
Those who are of faith are blessed with the faithful Abraham.

I highly recommend purchasing Pastor Prince's sermons on his mobile app "Joseph Prince" on Apple App Store or Google Play Store even after you read these notes as I may have missed out something he shared and the overall experience is definitely different when you listen to him preaching directly!
Use these notes as a revision guide instead of solely depending on them!

These sermon notes are independently-compiled by me, and I'm just a loyal and regular attendee of the the church's Sunday services, and I feel led to take detailed personal sermon notes of Pastor Prince's anointed messages to share them with the world, which desperately needs the true word of God and the original gospel of grace.

I feel blessed to be able to attend Pastor Joseph Prince's services in person, and would like to help everyone who isn't able to attend in person, to get hold of the messages as soon as it is preached!
