4 July 2021 - Know the Father’s Love - New Creation Church Sermon Notes - Pastor Lawrence Lim Sermon Notes

Pastor Lawrence Lim unveiled a good God to us, showing the lavish love of the Father whom we can call “Abba”. When you know the love of Abba God, you will experience His protection, provision, healing, and receive the help and breakthroughs that you need!

Mark 5:25-33 - The woman was unfruitful for twelve years and she tried her best in natural means to fix her problem. She was in a helpless and hopeless situation.
The woman heard about Jesus. What she heard about Jesus gripped her heart and caused her to have hope.
She must have heard good things about Jesus, about how He was going around healing people.
When she heard about Him, faith arose in her heart.
Many people there touched Jesus but did not get healed. The woman was healed after touching Him because she had faith to be healed.
Now is the time of salvation. Today is a great today for your miracle. God is willing to heal you.
Faith in Jesus caused Him (the omnipotent God) to stop in His tracks. Reach out and touch Jesus—you will receive your miracle.
The woman feared and trembled from experiencing God’s goodness. She was in awe of the miracle.

“A certain woman, who had an issue of blood for twelve years, and had suffered many things by many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better, but rather grew worse, having heard the things concerning Jesus, came up behind him in the crowd, and touched his clothes. For she said, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be made well.” Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction. Immediately Jesus, perceiving in himself that the power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd, and asked, “Who touched my clothes?” His disciples said to him, “You see the multitude pressing against you, and you say, ‘Who touched me?’” He looked around to see her who had done this thing. But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had been done to her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.” (Mark‬ ‭5:25-33‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Romans 8:32 - If God delivered up Jesus for your sake, He will not withhold lesser things like healing and provision from you.

“He who didn’t spare his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how would he not also with him freely give us all things?” (Romans‬ ‭8:32‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

John 10:11 - Our God is a good God. The devil is a bad devil. The lines are clear.
All the bad things that happened to you are from the devil, not from God. God is always good to you.

“The thief only comes to steal, kill, and destroy. I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” (John‬ ‭10:10-11‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Romans 2:4 - Today we “fear and tremble” from experiencing God’s goodness and being in awe of it—not a slavish fear of His punishment.

“Or do you despise the riches of his goodness, forbearance, and patience, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?” (Romans‬ ‭2:4‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Jeremiah 33:9 - When people see the goodness of God, they will fear and tremble.

“This city shall be to me for a name of joy, for a praise and for a glory, before all the nations of the earth, which shall hear all the good that I do to them, and shall fear and tremble for all the good and for all the peace that I procure to it.’”” (Jeremiah‬ ‭33:9‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

See God as a good Abba Father who loves you

John 1:18 - No one has seen the Father at any time.

“No one has seen God at any time. The one and only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him.” (John‬ ‭1:18‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Colossians 1:15 - When we look at Jesus, we will know exactly who our Father is and how He is like.

“who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.” (Colossians‬ ‭1:15‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

John 14:8-11 - If you want to know what the Father is like, just look at Jesus. Jesus is the exact representation of our Father.
When there were sick people, Jesus healed them.
When there were hungry people, Jesus provided bread and fish to feed them. There were even twelve baskets full of leftovers.

“Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you such a long time, and do you not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father. How do you say, ‘Show us the Father?’ Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I tell you, I speak not from myself; but the Father who lives in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me; or else believe me for the very works’ sake.” (John‬ ‭14:8-11‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Matthew 7:7-11 - If imperfect earthly fathers give their children good things, what more our perfect heavenly Father who loves us so much.

““Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened. Or who is there among you, who, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, who will give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” (Matthew‬ ‭7:7-11‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Luke 12:32 - Boldly ask God for big and great things. He will gladly give them to you.

“Don’t be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom.” (Luke‬ ‭12:32‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Romans 8:15-17 - We are no longer under the Law which is a bondage to fear. The Hebrew word for father, “Abba” is left untranslated here. It is a term of endearment.
It might be weird if you call your earthly father “Father”. It is too formal and distant sounding.
English equivalents of Abba: daddy, papa.

“For you didn’t receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God; and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ; if indeed we suffer with him, that we may also be glorified with him.” (Romans‬ ‭8:15-17‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

John 17:11-12 - In the Old Testament, there are many titles of God, such as “El Elyon”, “Elohim”, “Adonai”, “Yahweh”, “Yahweh Rapha”, and “Yahweh Tzidkenu”. But Jesus came to reveal God as our “Father”.
There is a special protection in the name “Abba”. Call Him and He will come running to help and deliver you from trouble.
He will be there for you and will never leave nor forsake you.

“I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them through your name which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in your name. Those whom you have given me I have kept. None of them is lost, except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.” (John‬ ‭17:11-12‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

John 17:25-26 - When we know God as our Father, we will experience the same love that the Father has for Jesus.

“Righteous Father, the world hasn’t known you, but I knew you; and these knew that you sent me. I made known to them your name, and will make it known; that the love with which you loved me may be in them, and I in them.”” (John‬ ‭17:25-26‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Luke 15:11-32 - The younger son was rejecting his father and dishonoring him by asking for his portion of the inheritance ahead of the proper time.
What he did was as good as saying, “I cannot wait for you to drop dead.”
The father divided the inheritance to his two sons—the culture is that the firstborn son receives a bigger portion.
The younger son spent his inheritance on riotous living and when a famine came in the foreign land, he was left penniless.
He had hit rock bottom in life. Everyone had abandoned him and he was in a deplorable, pathetic state.
The younger son devised a plan to return to his father.
When he was about to beg his father to take him back as a hired servant, the father ran from a great distance towards him, hugged, and kissed him.
The father has been scanning the horizon every day, looking forward to his son’s return. That is how he could see his son from a great distance away.
This father is not afraid to express his love publicly. God is a Father of hugs and kisses.
The younger son is always going to be a son in the father’s eyes.
The younger son received the best robes (righteousness), the ring (authority), and the sandals.
In the Old Testament, when God appeared to Moses and Joshua, they were asked to remove their sandals.
Under Grace, we receive sandals for our feet and can stand as sons in the Father’s presence.
The one who danced in the house was probably the father. He could not help himself—he was so happy that his son had come home.
How could the older son hear the dancing? The father must have been dancing vigorously and loudly.
The elder son had a bad impression of his father.
He wanted to make merry with his friends and not with his father.
The elder son had already received a bigger portion of the inheritance.
We do not have to be jealous of others. The Father is telling you today that you are always with Him, and that all He has is also yours.

“He said, “A certain man had two sons. The younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of your property.’ He divided his livelihood between them. Not many days after, the younger son gathered all of this together and traveled into a far country. There he wasted his property with riotous living. When he had spent all of it, there arose a severe famine in that country, and he began to be in need. He went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed pigs. He wanted to fill his belly with the husks that the pigs ate, but no one gave him any. But when he came to himself he said, ‘How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough to spare, and I’m dying with hunger! I will get up and go to my father, and will tell him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight. I am no more worthy to be called your son. Make me as one of your hired servants.”’ “He arose, and came to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ “But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring out the best robe, and put it on him. Put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. Bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let us eat, and celebrate; for this, my son, was dead, and is alive again. He was lost, and is found.’ They began to celebrate. “Now his elder son was in the field. As he came near to the house, he heard music and dancing. He called one of the servants to him, and asked what was going on. He said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and healthy.’ But he was angry, and would not go in. Therefore his father came out, and begged him. But he answered his father, ‘Behold, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed a commandment of yours, but you never gave me a goat, that I might celebrate with my friends. But when this, your son, came, who has devoured your living with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him.’ “He said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. But it was appropriate to celebrate and be glad, for this, your brother, was dead, and is alive again. He was lost, and is found.’” (Luke‬ ‭15:11-32‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Deuteronomy 21:18-21 - Under the Law, a stubborn and rebellious son could be stoned to death. In the New Testament the stubborn and rebellious son was restored with lavish love.
There has been a change because of the cross.
The reason why the rebellious son did not have to die for his sins is because another beloved Son died on the cross for his sins.

“If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son, who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and though they chasten him, will not listen to them; then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city, and to the gate of his place. They shall tell the elders of his city, “This our son is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey our voice. He is a glutton and a drunkard.” All the men of his city shall stone him to death with stones. So you shall remove the evil from among you. All Israel shall hear, and fear.” (Deuteronomy‬ ‭21:18-21‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Isaiah 53 - Jesus was smitten by God and pierced for our transgressions.

“Surely he has borne our sickness, and carried our suffering; yet we considered him plagued, struck by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought our peace was on him; and by his wounds we are healed.” (Isaiah‬ ‭53:4-5‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Isaiah 52:14 - Jesus’ visage was marred more than any man.

“Just as many were astonished at you (his appearance was marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men),” (Isaiah‬ ‭52:14‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Isaiah 50:6 - People spat on Jesus and pulled out His beard. Jesus endured all these sufferings and humiliation for our sakes—that we might be saved.

“I gave my back to those who beat me, and my cheeks to those who plucked off the hair. I didn’t hide my face from shame and spitting.” (Isaiah‬ ‭50:6‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

When Jesus went to the cross, He took your place. Barabbas was set free and Jesus took his place. We were wicked and sinful like Barabbas.

1 John 2:15-16 - The key is to know the love of the Father. When you know the love of the Father, you will not love the world.
The world is attractive, but it is not as attractive as our loving Heavenly Father.

“Don’t love the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father’s love isn’t in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, isn’t the Father’s, but is the world’s.” (1 John‬ ‭2:15-16‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Ephesians 5:1-2 - We will imitate God and walk in love when we know that we are beloved and dear to Him.

“Be therefore imitators of God, as beloved children. Walk in love, even as Christ also loved you, and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance.” (Ephesians‬ ‭5:1-2‬ ‭WEB‬)
